The electric drill is an excellent universal drive for a wide variety of fixtures. And in our magazine, we have repeatedly published readers' suggestions on how to expand the scope of this tool. Today we will talk about a lawn mower driven by the same electric drill.

Electric drill mower

The kinematics of such a mechanical gardening assistant is quite simple. The eccentric and connecting rod convert the rotation of the shaft into a reciprocating movement of the rod and the movable knife associated with it. The latter, moving relative to the stationary one, cuts off the stems of plants.

Now about the design. The whole device is fixed on a split flange mounted on the neck of the drill. The chuck is removed from the spindle and an eccentric is put in its place. It is best to make it composite by turning the central part from duralumin, and the outer part from bronze. The steel connecting rod is fixed with a pad screwed to the end of the eccentric.

The cylindrical part of the rod freely sits in the guide - a duralumin bar with a through hole.

The bed of the cutting device is a duralumin corner with a shelf thickness of about 3 mm. Knives, movable and fixed, are best cut from hacksaw blades for wood. The canvases are marked, holes Ø 4 - 6 mm are drilled at the vertices of the obtained triangles, and "extra" material is removed with the help of lever scissors; knife teeth are sharpened.

The knives are installed on the bed of the cutting unit as shown in Figure 1.

For the eccentric mechanism of the mower, it is necessary to make a housing. It consists of a base (duralumin 3 mm thick), a curved wall (duralumin 2 mm thick) and a lid. Connection of body elements with M4 screws on the corners.

The assembly of the mower begins with the installation of a split flange on the electric drill. Fixing it on the neck of the drill with a steel clamp. Next, an eccentric is put on the tapered shank of the spindle, and a connecting rod is put on it. The latter is fixed with an overlay with a screw. Then, the base of the body of the eccentric mechanism is attached to the split flange, and the guide is also attached to it. The rod itself is connected to the connecting rod with a cylindrical pin or a bolt with a nut.

After that, the bed of the cutting device (duralumin corner) is screwed to the guide, and knives are mounted on it - movable and fixed. By manually turning the spindle of the electric drill, make sure that the mechanism moves easily and, if necessary, modify the sliding surfaces. If everything is in order, assemble the remaining elements of the body of the eccentric mechanism - the drill can be plugged into the network and the mower can be tested already on electric traction.

There are two ways to use such a gardener's assistant - when cutting a bush, keep it in the air, and for mowing lawns, pair it with a simple two-wheeled cart. The button for turning on the electric drill in this case should be blocked and controlled by any switch installed on the cart handle.

Swedish engineers from A2 Acoustics, led by Urban Emborg, while working to reduce the level of noise in a car, accidentally discovered that the rear window can serve as an excellent membrane for emitting low-frequency sounds.
