How long are the orbital periods of binary stars?

The largest orbital periods have physical binary stars, the components of which are located far from each other - thousands and tens of thousands of astronomical units (that is, thousands and tens of thousands of times further than the Earth is from the Sun). These are the so-called wide pairs.

Their periods of circulation should reach hundreds of thousands and even millions of years. So, for example, the star Proxima Centauri moves in space together with the bright binary star Alpha Centauri, making a revolution around it in several million years. In the sky, they are separated by an angular distance of 2 degrees, which corresponds to a linear distance of at least 10 thousand astronomical units.

The shortest orbital period, only 81 minutes 38 seconds, has an eclipsing binary star WZ Sge in the constellation Arrows. (So far, this is the minimum of the known orbital periods in the Universe. Even the periods of revolution of artificial satellites of the Earth are longer.)

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
