When was the first plastic made?

The production of plastics began with the creation of new molecules. Chemists built molecules into a long chain. This whole process is called polymerization. During the polymerization process, new materials were created. Chemists have created and worked with plastics since the mid-1800s. Vinyl chloride was polymerized in 1838, sterol in 1839, acrylic in 1843, and polyester in 1847. But at that time there was no great need for these synthetic materials.

In 1870, while searching for a substitute for ivory, John Hight and his brother Isaac Hight discovered celluloid. It was a new, readily available, flexible material that did not mix with many chemicals. This prompted chemists to work on the creation of other synthetic materials.

In 1909, Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland discovered phenol formaldehyde. It was the first type of plastic from a series of thermoplastics. Buckeland tried to invent a substitute for shellac. Instead, he created a dark resin that hardens when heated.

The new material did not dissolve in common solvents. It could take any shape, did not conduct electricity, and was inexpensive. Bakeland named the new material Bakelite after his name. This plastic was the first fully synthetic material produced in large quantities. He paved the way for the development of a whole world of new plastics.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Which aircraft made the first non-stop flight around the world?

The American Voyager aircraft was the first to make a non-stop flight around the globe. He took off on December 14, 1986 from Edwards Air Force Base in Mojave, and landed 9 days later, 3 minutes and 44 seconds after the start, exactly in the same place. The plane was piloted by two people - Dick Rutan and Gina Yeager.

Before refueling, Voyager weighed only 426 kilograms, but with 17 fuel tanks filled (this amount was necessary for the flight), its weight increased to 4400 kilograms! He set as many as two absolute world records: flight distance in a straight line and along a circular route - 40,193 kilometers!

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

proton transistor 31.03.2012

Protonics may replace widespread electronics. At the University of Washington (USA), a prototype transistor has been created that does not work on electrons, but on protons, that is, hydrogen ions.

The diameter of the proton transistor is five micrometers. It consists of silicon and chitosan, a natural polymer that easily conducts hydrogen ions. This is the equivalent of a conventional electronic field effect transistor, however, the gain is only 10 instead of 10, like an electronic transistor. It is possible that in the future, on the basis of such elements, it will be possible to build microcircuits.

Due to the biocompatibility of chitosan, proton microcircuits will find application in various implantable medical devices.
