How did Odysseus, the son of the king of the tiny island of Ithaca, contrive to marry Penelope, the daughter of the mighty Spartan king?

The most beautiful of women, according to ancient Greek myths, was Helena, the daughter of Zeus and Leda, the wife of the Spartan king Tyndareus.

When Elena reached marriageable age, the rumor about her beauty spread so widely that several dozen kings and the most noble heroes of all Hellas gathered to woo the girl. Odysseus, then an unknown son of a king from the tiny island of Ithaca, joined the crowd of suitors. Realizing that he was too poor and had no hope of success, Odysseus did not even bring gifts to Elena. However, Tyndareus did not accept gifts from anyone, although he did not send suitors, because he was afraid that any choice of his would cause a quarrel.

It was then that Odysseus showed for the first time his cunning, which later became legendary. He advised Tyndareus to force all Helen's suitors to swear that they would protect Helen's chosen one, whoever he was. Tyndareus highly appreciated this advice and took advantage of it, and in gratitude he persuaded his co-ruler brother Icarius to marry his daughter Penelope to Odysseus.

How did cities originate?

We consider cities as part of our civilization. When many different people learned to work and live together, then large cities arose. The main difference between the city, town and village is in size. In most cases, the city is the largest settlement.

Almost all cities have grown out of villages. No one knows when and where the first city appeared. Some nomadic tribe of hunters could have founded it. The hunters found a place that they liked so much that they wanted to stay there. This happened about 6000 years before our era, or even earlier. Around 3000 BC. e. people already built big cities and lived in them.

In prehistoric times, man discovered that if you tame captured animals, it becomes much easier to provide yourself with food. People didn't want to chase animals through the woods every time they got hungry. People have also learned that you can have many more fruits and grains if you grow your own plants. This is how agriculture began. But it was impossible to roam all the time and cultivate the land at the same time. I had to stay in one place to harvest. It would not be easy to drive the cattle behind you. When the tribes began to remain in place, villages and towns arose.

Nothing remains of the first villages, as they consisted of buildings made of skins, wood or clay. Over time, man learned to make durable materials, and the villages began to grow and turn into cities.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Rapid bioprinting of living tissue 27.08.2019

Scientists in Switzerland and the Netherlands have come up with an optical bioprinting technology that takes just a few seconds to sculpt complex tissue shapes into a biocompatible hydrogel containing stem cells. Printed tissue and organs can be used in in vitro testing of new drugs instead of animal testing.

The technology has been called volumetric bioprinting. To create the tissue, the researchers designed a laser that shines light onto a rotating, transparent container filled with stem cell hydrogel. The energy of light is concentrated in certain places in the hydrogel, which then harden. After a few seconds, a complex three-dimensional figure appears, "suspended" in the gel. The researchers then inject endothelial cells into the resulting tissue to form blood vessels.

Using the new method, scientists have already been able to print several bioconstructions several centimeters in size: an artificial valve similar to a heart valve, a meniscus, and a fragment of a femur with a complex structure.

Using new technology, laboratories can mass-produce artificial tissues or organs at an unprecedented rate. Speed and replication volumes are very important when it comes to in vitro testing of new drugs, and this can help eliminate animal testing. This is a clear ethical advantage, as well as a way to reduce costs.
