Phraseologism: A wonderful new world.
Meaning: The expression is usually used ironically - in relation to an attempt to translate into reality a certain social utopia with features of totalitarianism: about a certain social model that is imposed on everyone as the only possible way of life. Equally common in the same sense is another translation of the phrase - "brave new world".
Origin: The primary source is the romantic drama The Tempest (161.2) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Miranda's response (act 5, scene 1): Oh brave new world!. "How beautiful is this new world. // In which there are such people!" The expression became catchphrase after the English writer Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) made it the title of his dystopian novel ("Brave New World", 1932), which is a satire on both totalitarianism and the standardized way of life "society consumption".

Origin:
The expression arose from the gospel story (Luke, 23:1-12) about how Jesus, captured by his opponents, was brought to trial by Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator in Palestine. Pontius Pilate, having learned that Jesus was a native of Galilee, sent him to Herod, who ruled this region. When Jesus refused to answer Herod, he sent him back to Pontius Pilate. The people, accustomed to hearing two words: "Pontius" and "Pilate", perceived them as the names of two persons, while the name of Herod fell out in the popular perception of this gospel story. This is where the expression comes from. |
