How does a male emperor penguin help a female in raising chicks?

Emperor penguins, the largest of the penguins, breed on ice without any nests. Having laid an egg on ice or snow, the female gives it to the male, and she goes to feed at the ice edge. Holding on its paws and covering it with a leathery abdominal fold, the male penguin incubates the egg for 65 days.

This happens in May - July, in the midst of the Antarctic winter, with a 40-degree frost and often gale-force wind, in the middle of an icy desert!

By the time the chick hatches (at first it will also sit on daddy's paws and bask in its warm leathery fold) and the well-fed, weight-bearing mother returns from the sea, the male loses up to 40 percent of his weight. And he still has to go many tens of kilometers to open water.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How did Amphitrion make sure which of the twins born to Alcmene was his son?

When Hercules was not yet a year old, jealous Hera sent two huge snakes with azure scales to Amphitryon's house, strictly punishing them to lime the boy. Slipping into the house, they crawled across the marble floor into the nursery, flames bursting from their eyes and poison dripping from their teeth. But Zeus miraculously lit up the room, and the awakened twins saw vile creatures above them, shooting forked tongues.

When Amphitrion, awakened by the frightened cries of Iphicles, ran into the nursery, Hercules, who had not even screamed all this time, proudly showed him almost strangled snakes, which he tightly squeezed one in each hand. Then the snakes died, and the baby laughed, jumped for joy and threw them at the feet of Amphitryon.

According to another version, the snakes were completely harmless and Amphitryon himself put them in the cradle, wanting to make sure which of the twins was his son. In any case, after the incident, Amphitrion had no doubts left.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

SpaceX to launch ASFPC-52 military satellite 27.06.2018

SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk's tech empire, today announced that it has won a full grant from the US Air Force to launch a special classified US military satellite aboard its new Falcon Heavy rocket.

This $130+ million contract was in fact initially the subject of fierce disputes and competition between SpaceX and another equally well-known space company, United Launch Alliance, which has an equally capacious Delta 4 rocket. However, by reducing the initial costs - since the costs on Delta 4 were about $ 350 million - SpaceX was able to finally pull ahead to receive a grant.

This becomes a truly great honor and opportunity for SpaceX to show their enthusiasm and ingenuity for space exploration with as little financial hardship as possible. As for the launched satellite, so far it is only known that this is a special military satellite AFSPC-52, owned by the direct US Air Force and it will not be launched until 2020.

It will be carried to orbit by the Falcon Heavy rocket, which, in terms of its carrying capacity and spaciousness, noticeably exceeds its older sister Falcon 9 - it is worth noting that the first tests of the Falcon Heavy were carried out at the beginning of this year and they ended with tremendous success. SpaceX President Gwynn Shotwell noted that the new contract for the launch of a military satellite is a new page in the history of the company's development - especially in the context of the development of permanent space cargo transportation of any scale.

In addition, as part of the new SpaceX tests, two more test flights and returns of the Falcon Heavy rocket are planned before the end of this year - however, it is still unknown when exactly they will take place. In addition, at the moment the company is busy settling some special problems related to the technical improvement of the equipment of rockets for the new format of space cargo transportation - there are active rumors that military orders will soon become the main source of income for SpaceX for the next few years.
