Round table

Knights of the Round Table
Knights of the Round Table

Phraseologism: Round table.

Meaning: A symbol of equal negotiations, in which several parties participate, driven by the desire to agree, to find a compromise

Origin: The creator of the round table is the wizard Merlin from the English legends of the early Middle Ages about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (more precisely, the anonymous authors of this epic). One day, the wizard Merlin suggested to the leader of the Britons Uther (Arthur's father) an idea on how to avoid disputes between his knights over a place of honor at the table of their ruler. He advised Uther to remove the traditionally shaped table from his palace and put in its place a round table where each knight could feel equal to another. Thus, all discussions about the place of honor would become meaningless. The expression has firmly entered the language of international journalism, for example, "round table talks", etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Telephone conversation excites the cerebral cortex 01.12.2006

Around two billion people in the world now regularly use cellular telephony, and by the end of 2006 an estimated 730 million units will be sold. But it is still unclear whether prolonged exposure to radio waves from an apparatus applied directly to the head does not harm the brain.

The new Italian study also does not allow us to answer this question, but provides interesting information for reflection. Fifteen young volunteers talked for 45 minutes on cell phones of one of the most common standards now - GSM-900. At the same time, their brain activity was monitored.

It turned out that in 12 of the experimental young men, the cells of the motor cortex of the brain in the place where the apparatus was applied became excited during the conversation and returned to normal only an hour after the end of the experiment. The motor cortex controls human muscle movements.

The experimenters do not say that the phenomenon they discovered is dangerous, but, in any case, experience proves that radio waves cause some kind of reaction in the brain. True, the researchers do not report what was discussed during the conversations. After all, there are topics that by themselves, without radio waves, very excite the cerebral cortex.
