How did a Jewish girl manage to win the photo contest of Aryan children?

The competition for the best photo of an Aryan child, held in the Third Reich in 1935, was won by a six-month-old Hessie Taft. The organizers of the competition and Goebbels himself, who is credited with choosing the winner, did not suspect that the girl was Jewish. Her mother, Paulina Levenson, took Hessie to a photographer to take pictures for a family album, who, without the knowledge of her parents, sent a photo to the competition. The girl had to be hidden at home, and a few years later the family managed to leave Germany and eventually reach the United States.

How did the shortest street in the world come about?

In 1883, a hotel was built in the Scottish city of Vic, the windows of which overlooked two streets, and the entrance was located exactly at their narrow intersection. Without thinking about which street to attribute the address of the hotel to, the city authorities specifically created a new street, Ebenezer Place. The length of this shortest street in the world is just over two meters.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

A more effective analogue of a lie detector 13.12.2018

There is an opinion in the world that polygraphs, which are also called lie detectors, are not reliable, in their work much depends not even on the perfection of the device itself, as many experts prove, but on the operator servicing the polygraph, that is, on his professional abilities, experience and even the natural talent of a psychologist. But, as a rule, such people easily determine whether a person is lying or not, without any technique.

That is why polygraphs were never taken into account in court cases, although they were still widely used, for example, in the selection of personnel for especially important state structures - the CIA, the KGB, and so on. This is understandable, since the greatest psychologists who can distinguish lies from truth are few in the world, and there are a great many structures where it is necessary to check a person for honesty.

That is why inventors of all stripes did not give up hope to come up with a new, more advanced lie detector. And now, it seems, the startup company "Converus" managed to do it. At the very least, advertising channels are now trumpeting the unique "EyeDetect" system created by this startup. It is reported that "EyeDetect" uses an AI system that is trained to detect signs of lies based on the analysis of even the slightest changes in the size of the pupils of the subjects, the reaction of the eyes to questions.

The company claims that the reliability of their system is at least 86 percent, plus it is much cheaper than a polygraph. Probably, succumbing to such assurances, "EyeDetect" is already using with might and main the largest American companies in the selection of personnel. Information flashed in the media that even the US State Department signed a contract with the startup "Converus" to provide services in Guatemala, Paraguay and so on. Customs officers, the military of the United States are allegedly also testing today this unique technology, which is sorely needed in such state structures.
