What is oceanography?

Almost all objects and phenomena that exist in nature correspond to some kind of science that studies them. Oceanography is a complex of all sciences related to the study of the ocean, which helps a person to find out how the ocean appeared, what processes take place in it.

As you can imagine, this requires serious research! Let's see what's included.

You can start from the coastline. The seashore (or the boundary between land and sea) is constantly changing due to tides, winds, the daily impact of the sea on the coast, and the up and down movements of the land. The temperature and salt content of the oceans are also studied. And, oddly enough, man still does not have a satisfactory explanation for why the ocean is salty.

And the tides? Tides are regular movements of water associated with the attraction of the Sun and Moon. They are also constantly studied by oceanographers. Now let's move on to currents. Ocean currents are like rivers flowing through the ocean. They are warmer or colder than the waters they pass through. Because currents are of great importance to humans, they are constantly being studied. As we know, plants and living organisms of countless species live in the ocean. Oceanographers and this area pay a lot of attention. What is the depth of the ocean in different places? This is also very important for humans, and there are scientists who only measure ocean depths. A person is even interested in what happens at the bottom of the ocean.

We know that up to a depth of 3657 meters the ocean floor is covered with soft, silty mud. It consists of calcareous skeletons of tiny marine organisms. The animal and plant life of the ocean floor is studied from samples of silt taken from there.

In general, the ocean, which seems to most of us just a huge body of water, is actually a huge and complex organism, about which a person wants to know as much as possible. And oceanographers increase our knowledge of the ocean by continually studying everything it is made of and contains.

How do owls hunt?

Owls are birds of prey. They are the best hunters of all predators. In an owl, everything seems to be created specifically for hunting. The owl has powerful, needle-sharp claws that pierce the victim like the teeth of a trap. The claws are connected into one paw, which the owl can turn in any direction. In most species of owls, large eyes see better in the evening or at night in the moonlight than in the daytime. Owls have more sensitive ears than other birds. Their ears can be of various shapes, they are hidden on the head under feathers.

The owl has soft, down-lined wing feathers. This allows you to make the flight of an owl almost silent, which is very helpful when hunting. Owls usually hunt at sunset, at dusk or in moonlight. They hear mouse rustling for many meters. When an owl listens from its hunting perch, it pushes back the feathers and skin covering its ears. In this case, an auricle is formed, which perceives the slightest sound.

When the owl locates the prey by hearing, it suddenly and accurately attacks and sticks sharp claws. Owls feed on mammals such as mice, squirrels, and rabbits. They also eat lizards, frogs, birds and even fish. Owls catch mice better than any human-made mousetrap.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The perfect snack for heart health 09.06.2020

According to doctors from the UK, almonds can be considered an ideal daily snack that benefits the heart - it effectively protects against the development of many pathologies of the cardiovascular system.

King's College London has determined that regular consumption of almonds improves the functioning of blood vessels (not to mention other health benefits). For this reason, they consider the product to be the perfect snack.

The use of almonds helps to reduce the level of fat in the abdominal cavity and "bad" cholesterol in the vessels, which are the leading markers of heart disease. They conducted a study involving almost 7 thousand people (specialists monitored the nutritional habits of the subjects). It turned out that it was almond lovers who had the best indicators of heart health.

People who prefer to snack on nuts during the day tend to consume less carbohydrate foods, trans fats, and salt in general.

Another experiment showed that by replacing 20% of junk food consumed daily with almonds, people can reduce their personal risk of heart disease by 32%. The antioxidants of this nut protect blood vessels from the harmful effects of free radicals, which can disrupt blood flow to the myocardium and provoke the development of coronary heart disease.
