Who led the Trojans in their fighting against the Achaeans?

The main Trojan hero during the Trojan War was Hector, the first-born and most prominent of the sons of King Priam and Hecuba. Hector did not approve of the abduction of the Spartan queen Helen by his brother Paris and even suggested that the council of Trojan leaders return her to her husband. However, the first Greek who set foot on Trojan land (Protesilaus) fell precisely at the hands of Hector.

Hector really became famous in the tenth year of the war. As the eldest son and immediate successor of Priam, he led the fighting of the Trojans and at the same time distinguished himself by strength and heroism and inflicted great damage on the Greeks. He challenged Achilles to a duel, and when he replied that he was no longer fighting, he entered into single combat with Ajax Telamonides, the most powerful Greek hero after Achilles.

Under the leadership of Hector, the Trojans broke into the fortified enemy camp, approached the Greek ships and managed to set fire to one of them. Only the intervention of Poseidon prevented the complete defeat of the Greeks. Before the very gates of the besieged city, Hector managed with the help of Apollo to slay Patroclus and remove the armor of Achilles from the slain.

After Achilles entered the battle, Hector, despite the pleas of his parents, remained in the field one on one with him and died in a duel, predicting the imminent death of Achilles himself. The latter, obsessed with a thirst for revenge for his friend Patroclus, tied the body of the murdered Hector to his chariot and traveled around Troy, dragging the corpse of the slain enemy. Although in the future Achilles continued to desecrate the body of Hector, neither predatory animals nor decay touched him: the dead Hector was protected by Apollo, who repeatedly helped his pet during his lifetime.

Apollo was the first to raise his voice in defense of the murdered Hector at the council of the gods - and Achilles received an order from Zeus to give the body of the murdered Priam, who gave his son an honorable funeral. After the fall of Troy, the Greeks, fearing revenge for Hector, were afraid to leave alive even his little son Astyanax.

What positive role did alchemy play?

Alchemy is a pre-scientific direction in the development of chemistry that arose in the II-IV centuries in Egypt and became especially widespread in Western Europe in the XII-XIV centuries.

The alchemists considered their main task to be the transformation (transmutation) of base metals into noble ones with the help of an imaginary substance - the "philosopher's stone". Among the goals of the alchemists were also obtaining the elixir of longevity, the universal solvent and other substances with miraculous properties.

In the process of searching for these miraculous remedies, alchemists discovered ways to obtain many practically valuable compounds and mixtures (mineral and vegetable paints, glasses, enamels, metal alloys, acids, alkalis, salts, medicines), and also created methods of laboratory work (distillation, sublimation, filtration), invented new laboratory instruments (e.g. long-term heating ovens, stills). Egyptian alchemists discovered, in particular, ammonia.

Alchemy had a significant impact on medieval culture and contributed to the development of modern science.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Olive oil as a pain reliever 17.04.2006

Australian and American pharmacists have discovered the compound oleocanthal in olive oil, which has the same analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect as the drug ibuprofen, used for arthritis, myalgia, and toothache.

True, 50 milliliters of olive oil relieve pain 10 times weaker than the usual dose of ibuprofen, but there are no side effects. Olive oil also acts as a cancer and stroke prevention.
