Focus Description:

Throw! The magician informs the audience that he has now bewitched the postcards so that if they are thrown, they themselves will return. He makes several magical passes, picks up the most ordinary postcard (you can let the audience make sure that there is no catch), throws it, and it really flies back.

Focus secret:

The secret of the trick is how to throw the card. Take the card in your hand so that the thumb is on top, and the rest, except for the index finger, are on the bottom. The index finger rests on the side of the card. Hold the postcard in a horizontal position at waist level.

You need to throw a card with a sharp forward movement, raising your hand to shoulder level. At the same time, push the postcard with your index finger in the opposite direction, twisting as a result, it will describe a large circle in the air and return back. Now it remains only to catch the postcard.

Focus is simple, but requires prior training.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Time-inverted optical waves 31.12.2020

A team of researchers from the University of Queensland and Nokia Bell Labs have developed a new method to produce time-inverted optical waves. Temporal inversion in physics does not at all mean the possibility of traveling "back to the future". This term describes a special type of wave that can travel back through an object exactly along the path taken by the first non-inverted wave. It's like shooting a wave propagating backwards, and this method can be used in completely new imaging technologies, in communication and other technologies related to the movement of light in various environments.

“Imagine a short light pulse moving from a point source of light to an object consisting of a scattering material, such as fog,” the researchers explain the essence of their achievement, “When the light reaches the fog, it scatters, splitting into many rays that arrive at different points in space at different times. Our technology allows us to very accurately measure all aspects of such scattered light and create its "inverted" version, which, after passing through the fog, "collects" into the original single pulse emitted by the source."

The technology implemented by scientists is quite complex and involves many unique optical components that allow us to consider a light pulse as a 3D object entering the system, track the transformations of the structure of this object and create another 3D object that, having passed through the system in the opposite direction, will acquire the original structure of the first.

"All this must be done within a time frame measured in trillionths of a second. Thus, no mechanical system with moving parts, nor a system that uses electrical signals, can be used in this technology," the researchers write, "Therefore, all" calculations "and the transformations are performed at the hardware optical level, and our method is the first in the history of science that allows such manipulations with a beam of light."

The most precise control of the shape and structure of a light pulse is extremely important for many areas of science and technology, ranging from new imaging technologies, nonlinear microscopy, quantum optics, nanophotonics, plasmonics, to the creation of ultra-high intensity laser light beams. Moreover, with the help of the new device, scientists were able to conduct scientific experiments that were previously only possible in theory.
