Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What desire of the musicians of the orchestra inspired Haydn when composing the Farewell Symphony?

Many works by Joseph Haydn were commissioned by his patron, the Hungarian prince Miklós Esterházy. The famous Farewell Symphony was written by Haydn while at the princely summer residence together with the court orchestra. The stay dragged on much longer than expected by the musicians, who already wanted to return to their families. Therefore, Haydn made such an unusual conclusion to the symphony: the musicians took turns extinguishing the candles and leaving their seats. The prince, apparently, understood the hint and sent the orchestra home the next day.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

XNUMXD scanning system 10.04.2013

Specialists from the Scottish Heriot-Watt University have created an original scanning system that allows you to create a three-dimensional model of an object located at a distance of almost 1 km. This is not about a stereo image, but about a three-dimensional, three-dimensional, high-resolution model that can be "twisted" and viewed from different angles. Until now, it was possible to make such a model only after shooting an object from different angles, but the new time-of-flight (ToF) technology allows you to do this from a long distance and, in fact, from one point.

ToF technology is currently widely used for machine vision. At Heriot-Watt University, it was creatively redesigned and created a "long-range" device for volumetric photography. The essence of the technology is as follows: a low-power infrared laser beam quickly scans an object, pixel by pixel, registering the time of flight of photons back and forth. The system has a resolution of a matter of millimeters, since it is equipped with a sensor capable of capturing individual photons.

The new scanner is especially good if you need to detect objects hidden behind some kind of "chaotic heap" of objects, for example, the foliage of trees. However, while he cannot take a detailed picture of a human face - in the pictures it looks like a dark spot. This is due to the fact that at long wavelengths the human face does not reflect a sufficiently large number of photons. However, the reflectivity of the skin can change under different circumstances, for example, dry skin can be distinguished from sweaty skin. Also, the new scanner easily distinguishes a mannequin from a living person.

Currently, the developers are planning to increase the speed of the scanning system: so far, a high-resolution image can be obtained in only 5-6 minutes, although theoretically this can be done in just a few seconds. The existing delay is due to too slow image processing on the computer.

It is planned to use high-speed solid-state drives (SSD) and a more powerful computer. According to the researchers, this will reduce the image processing time to 1 minute. In the long run, specialized processors will be used to get the job done even faster. In addition, the developers plan to increase the scanning range to 10 km and reduce the size of the device.
