Engineers from Sandia National Laboratories and New Mexico-based CSolPower LLC are working together on a project that aims to create an affordable method of energy storage. This project uses electrically charged stones to efficiently store electricity.

The essence of the system is that it heats or cools the stones with air to store thermal energy, which is subsequently converted into clean electricity. Such technology supports the pursuit of clean energy and can be used in a variety of applications, including providing electricity during periods of high demand or when renewable sources are unavailable.

The installation includes a container of stones that can be heated or cooled by air, providing thermal energy storage.

The scientists note that the gravel used in this system can be successfully sourced from landscaping companies without the need for extensive cleaning or preparation.

Experts have already tested a compact installation with a capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours at the National Solar Energy Test Site. Photovoltaic panels have also been installed there and modifications have been made to demonstrate the system's ability to charge from intermittent power sources.

The scientists note that reducing the cost of this thermal energy storage system or similar general energy storage systems could improve the prospects for their use in industry and increase the likelihood of a transition to renewable energy sources. According to the scientists, their practical method involves storing excess electricity as heat and using it to heat water and rooms at night. The technology prototype will be tested until June 2024.
