Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who invented the balloon?

One evening in 1781, the French inventor Joseph Montgolfier noticed how his wife, passing by the fireplace, swelled a silk peignoir. This led the inventor to some thoughts. Joseph and his brother Etienne set fire to scraps of paper under a silk ball and watched it inflate and fly up.

This is how the idea of a balloon filled with heated air (smoke) was born. Hot air balloon (this name was given to the ball made by Joseph and Etienne) was a linen bag with a diameter of about 30 meters, covered with a layer of paper. The brothers carried out the first successful launch of the ball (without a crew) on June 5, 1783 in their hometown of Vidalon-les-Annon. After the experiment, they were invited by the Paris Academy of Sciences to launch a balloon in the capital.

Thus began the era of balloons. There is, however, not very reliable information about much earlier flights. For example, about the balloon that rose in Beijing in 1306 during the ceremony of accession to the throne of Emperor Fo Kien. Or about the balloon that the Portuguese monk Bartolomeo de Cusmao flew in 1709.

But still, June 5, 1783 is considered the official birthday of the hot air balloon (aerostat).

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Nanodevice generator 23.04.2010

A generator has been created that can draw energy to power nanodevices from the external environment. The work of Professor Zhong Linwang of the Georgia Tech University to create electricity generators based on zinc dioxide nanorods has led to another success: the new generators were able to provide power to sensors for the acidity of the solution and ultraviolet radiation.

Zinc dioxide is a piezoelectric, its crystals are capable of generating electricity when deformed. According to an improved technique, a brush of such crystals is chemically grown on a gold-coated substrate. Then it is filled with methyl methacrylate and the upper part is bled off with plasma. As a result, the generator is protected from the environment, and all bristles are of equal length. On top of the resulting plate is attached a layer of silicon with a platinum coating.

Such a generator of 20 bristles at a strain oscillation amplitude of 2% per second gives a potential difference of 1,2 V. A generator of 700 horizontally arranged zinc dioxide fibers created in a similar way gave a peak potential difference of 1,26 V with a strain of only 0,19%. One cubic centimeter generator of three layers of zinc dioxide brushes provides 2,7 mW of power.

For comparison: wristwatches require 1-10 microwatts, that is, almost a thousand times less. It is not surprising that with such a powerful generator, the authors of the work managed to create microscopic sensors for the acidity of the solution and ultraviolet radiation: in both cases, changes in the potential difference of the generator depending on external conditions are recorded.

The source of deformation for the generator can be tides, and sound waves, and mechanical vibrations like the flutter of a flag in the wind, and the pressure of the foot on the sole of the boot, and the movement of clothing elements.
