What are turtles?

All turtles - sea, freshwater and land - have a hard outer shell, scaly skin and a keratinized nose. All of them breathe with lungs and have shells consisting of two parts: outer, or upper, and lower. Through the holes between these two halves, the turtle can stick its head with neck, tail and paws out. Turtles have well-developed eyesight, taste and touch, but they hear very poorly. Most turtles eat a wide variety of foods.

Female tortoises can make hissing sounds, while males can make something like "grunts". Some huge land tortoises can even growl!

The largest of all existing turtles is a leatherback turtle that lives in sea water. Its usual weight is about 450 kilograms, and the largest individuals can reach 2 meters in length and have a weight of 680 kilograms. Turtle soup is made from green turtle meat, which also belongs to sea turtles. It is found in tropical seas and weighs about 225 kilograms.

The horny turtle shell, which is obtained from another sea turtle called the caretta, is highly valued. It is the smallest of the sea turtles and is rarely more than one meter in length. Its carapace consists of separate transparent horny plates of dark brown color with numerous yellow streaks. The largest tortoise in North America is the vulture tortoise, which lives in the Mississippi region. It weighs up to 70 kilograms. She has a long, massive tail and strong sharp jaws.

The most common land tortoise in North America is the wood tortoise, which has brick-red skin. It is not difficult to tame it, and it accepts food from the hands.

In winter, turtles hibernate and hide at the bottom of ponds or in burrows on the ground. Turtles sometimes live for 200 years, or even more!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How many bees are in the hive?

Bees have a complex social organization, in some ways even more complex than that of humans. No other animal species can compare with them in this respect. The bee can only survive when it is a member of the colony. By itself, the bee will not be able to survive for a long time.

A colony of bees consists of one queen (womb), thousands of worker bees, and in certain seasons, several hundred or even thousands of drones, or males.

The colony must have some shelter. Anything can be a hive: a hollow inside a log, a box or a modern industrial hive.

The uterus lays eggs, but she is not able to follow everything else. She can lay over 1500 eggs per day, which is about 250 per season. Rarely does a queen manage to lay a million eggs in her lifetime: usually most queens live only one or two years. She lays fertilized eggs, which later turn into worker bees and queens, and unfertilized ones, which turn into drones.

A colony may only have a few thousand worker bees, but in the process of developing them, 60 bees can appear! As you can see, at certain times the hive is very crowded. With such a large number of worker bees, it is necessary to divide the colony into several colonies. Each worker bee performs a clearly defined job, and without prior training. She can do very difficult work, and so quickly, as if she has been doing this for a very long time. At first, the worker bee only cleans the cells. Later, she will take over the job of feeding the larvae, which will soon leave the hive. In the end, she will become a field bee that will collect nectar and pollen, which will then become honey.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Ocean acidification is detrimental to coral reefs 29.01.2018

Ocean acidification is increasing every year and complicates the development of coral reefs. Scientists make predictions by the year 2100.

The coral reef ecosystem is endangered due to global climate change on the planet. Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) conducted a study that found that ocean acidification makes it harder for coral skeletons to grow and compact.

Climate change, sea level rise and significant warming in all parts of the ocean interfere with the natural development of coral reefs, because this marine animal reaches for the Sun, therefore, requires compaction, which is becoming less and less possible for him. But sea warming only causes coral bleaching, while acidification is more damaging and difficult to detect.

According to scientists, by 2100 the density of reefs in the Coral Triangle region will decrease to 20%, and in the Caribbean, the Red Sea and towards the Hawaiian Islands the situation will be slightly better, the seals will decrease by 10%.
