Eucommia vyazolistnaya (Chinese gutta-percha tree), Eucommia ulmoides Oliver. Botanical description, habitat and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Eucommia vyazolistny (Chinese gutta-percha tree)

A tree with a well-developed densely leafy crown, reaching 20 m in height, of the eucommium family (Eucommiaceae).

The trunk and branches are covered with brownish gray or dull dark gray bark. All parts of the plant contain gutta. The leaves are alternate, b-10 cm long, petiolate, elliptical or oblong-ovate, dark green, slightly wrinkled.

Flowers inconspicuous, unisexual, dioecious, one in the axils of scales or undeveloped leaves. Fruits are elongated-elliptical winged, nuts 2,5-4 cm long. Seeds are narrow-lanceolate with a thin hard skin.

Blossoms in April-May, fruits ripen in October-November.

Range and habitats. The area of eucommia elmifolia is entirely located in China, mostly along the Yangtze River, in its middle reaches. It appears on the map as a widening northwest and then southward stretch that runs from Zhejiang through Anhui, Hubei, and Hunan, spanning the very south of Shanxi and Shaanxi, and then through the center and east of Sichuan, Guizhou, western Guangxi, and eastern Yunnan. , almost reaching the border with Vietnam here.

Eucommia grows at altitudes from 300 to 2500 m above sea level, mainly in the undergrowth of mountain subtropical forests. Single trees are also found much lower. It is believed that Eucommia survived in the wild in the forests of Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui and Zhejiang.

Forms shoots and gives root offspring. Thermophilic (tolerates frosts not lower than -20 ° C). Cultivated in damp and moist soils. Propagated mainly by cuttings, successfully propagated also by horizontal layering.

Chemical composition. The bark contains chlorogenic acid and a large amount of gutta-percha. Up to 3,1% chlorogenic acid was found in the leaves, as well as caffeic acid, aucubin (renanthin or aukubozid) and gutta-percha.

The bark is used to prepare preparations. The raw material is flat, trough-shaped or tubular pieces of bark of various shapes and sizes, light brown in color with a grayish sheen, slightly wrinkled. The inner surface of the bark is smooth, dark brown or brown. At the fracture site, silver-white, elastic, thin threads of gutta-percha are visible to the naked eye.

The smell of the bark is weak, peculiar; the taste is slightly sweet, astringent. The moisture content in raw materials should not exceed 14%, total ash should not exceed 8%, extractives should not be less than 14%, pieces of bark with wood residues and separately wood should not exceed 5%, organic and mineral impurities should not exceed 0,5% of each .

Application in medicine. The bark of the shoots of the branches and trunks of eucommia (lat. Cortex Eucommiae), collected during the period of sap flow and dried, is a medicinal raw material for obtaining a tincture that has an antihypertensive effect and is used to treat an early stage of hypertension. Its action is most likely due to chlorogenic and caffeic acids, as well as glycoside aucubin.

Other uses. The plant is cultivated for the production of gutta-percha. Gutta-percha is contained in all organs of the plant (leaves, stem, root, pericarp), in special gutt-receptacles (non-branching cells with club-shaped ends), which are located along the vascular bundles, that is, confined to the veins. The system of leaf guttides is a network that “duplicates” venation.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The smallest remote controlled robot 29.05.2022

Scientists at Northwestern University in Illinois (USA) have demonstrated the smallest remote-controlled robot, the dimensions of which are only 0,5 mm in all axes. With its tiny dimensions, the machine can walk, jump, turn and curve - without the use of hydraulics or electricity.

The mechanism is based on an alloy with a shape memory effect, which, when creating a structure, is deformed using a thin coating of glass. When heated, the alloy returns to its original shape, and when cooled, the glass coating re-deforms. Heating is carried out using a laser, and due to the miniature size of the mechanism, heat dissipates very quickly: up to 10 cycles in 1 second.

The direction of the laser beam determines the direction in which the robot moves, and its average speed is about half the length of the body per second. The authors of the project experimented with several forms of mechanism, including a tripod that can walk on water, spiral limb structures that allow robots to jump, and some other options that allow for other movements.

The head of the research group, Professor John A. Rogers, said that in practice, such robots can be used both in industry, in the repair and assembly of complex structures, and in medicine - to stop bleeding and remove tumors. True, in some cases it will be necessary to solve the problem of where and how to position the laser.
