The Inuit word igloo (igloo or iglu) means "house". Most igloos are made from snow or animal skins.

Snow block igloos were part of the Thule culture - the forerunners of the Inuit - and were used in central and eastern Canada until relatively recently.

However, snow igloos are built exclusively by Canadian Eskimos. In Alaska, they are completely unknown, and out of 14 Eskimos living in Greenland (according to the census of the 000s), only 1920 saw the "snow hut" with their own eyes.

The first igloos ever seen by Europeans caught the eye of Martin Frobisher on Baffin Island in 1576, on an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage.
