Advantages

In inexpensive electronic ballasts, circuits of a half-bridge self-oscillating inverter (with self-excitation) implemented on discrete elements are almost universally used. Virtue such electronic ballasts is their low cost. As power switches, most often not field-effect, but special bipolar transistors are used here (abbreviated as BMT - bipolar powerful transistors).

Terminology issues

In foreign technical literature to refer to transistors of various types abbreviations are used:

IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor);
MOSFET (Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor);
BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor);
BPT (Bipolar Power Transistor). Corresponding domestic analogues:
IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor);
MY PT (field-effect transistors of the metal-oxide-semiconductor structure);
BT (bipolar transistors);
BMT (bipolar powerful transistors).

Individual beacon to rescue the victim 21.11.2002

In the United States, the "Sea Marshall" device, designed for individual rescue in emergency situations, such as an accident at sea, went on sale.

A beacon weighing about 150 grams and the size of a pack of cigarettes is hung around the neck, for which there is a flexible transparent tube, which is a bright electroluminescent lamp. To report a distress signal on the international frequency of 121,5 MHz, the user of the device just needs to press a button. The beacon also turns on from contact with water for 20 s.

An ordinary lithium battery with a voltage of 9 V is enough for 20...30 hours of continuous operation of the beacon. The device costs about 170 USD.
