Why don't elephant seals suffer from decompression? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? Why don't elephant seals suffer from decompression? Elephant seals are excellent divers. On average, this animal dives under water for 20 minutes, diving to a depth of about 500 meters. Some "record holders" reach a depth of one and a half kilometers and can stay under water for up to two hours (for comparison: military submarines go mainly at a depth of 300 meters). To get fresh air into the lungs, the elephant seal emerges, spending only 3 minutes to rise from a depth of about a kilometer and without suffering from decompression at all. Animals are endowed with such amazing abilities due to the unusually high content of blood in their body, this main carrier of oxygen in the body. The mass of the blood of the seal is about 20 percent of its total mass (for comparison: in humans, blood accounts for only 7 percent of its body weight). Author: Kondrashov A.P. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: How do frogs hatch from eggs? Although frogs live on land, many frog species venture into the water when it's time to lay their eggs. This usually happens in the spring. The frog looks for quiet corners near the very shore of a pond or a small lake, in shallow water. At night or early in the morning, the female lays a certain number of eggs, eggs. They are connected in a solid mass, resembling jelly, and attached to some plant in the pond. One small frog lays two to three thousand eggs. Large - from 6 to 8 thousand. Each egg is round, black on top, light in weight, about 1,5 mm in diameter. Freshly laid caviar is no more than a teaspoon in volume, but then it increases several times compared to its original size. After a few days or weeks, depending on the type of frog, the eggs burst and tadpoles emerge from them. They have a tail fin and gills. At first, the gills are on the outside of the body. But gradually they are covered with skin, and lungs are formed inside the body and other changes occur. Paws develop. The hind ones show first, while the anterior ones remain underdeveloped until the last stage of metamorphosis occurring with the tadpole. The tail is absorbed by the body and completely disappears by the time the tadpole turns into an adult frog, ready for life on land. The full transformation of a tadpole into a frog takes a week if the weather is warm. In cool weather, this takes a little more than a week.
