The largest sales volumes in the home theater market today are in the home theater in one box segment. And this is not surprising. Home theaters in one box solve many problems for the consumer at once: by purchasing it, you immediately get a ready-made home theater, which is all you need to connect to a TV - and you can enjoy your favorite movies.

If we approach the issue fundamentally, then it is necessary to recognize that such a category as "cinema in one box" does not exist in fact. The fact is that this solution, in fact, is nothing more than a set of active 5.1 acoustics selected for a specific model of a DVD player. What is the selection criterion? The first is the conscience of the manufacturer. Because it is possible to form a cinema in one box, based on the fact that a huge batch of such and such a model of speakers was stale in the warehouse and a fresh model of a well-advertised player is on the way. And in order to get the most out of the latest event, you just need to collect the "stale kit" and the new player in one box, give a small discount and declare for sale. With the help of this simple operation, they kill two birds with one stone: they make a profit from a new model of a DVD player and sell the product that was or was difficult to sell before. Of course, only unscrupulous firms act in this way and, as a rule, they do not stay on the market for a long time.

The second selection method is when the manufacturer chooses a DVD player model that is of the highest quality and reliability, functionally rich, versatile in terms of connection, and selects an acoustic system for it in such a way as to sound a small hall, the average area of which is about 20 sq.m. As a rule, home theaters in one box are not designed for large halls. Undoubtedly, when coordinating the elements, great attention is also paid to the design of the components. Recently, most modern home theaters in one box have acquired somewhat "cosmic" outlines. More and more often they are made of metal alloys, the front speakers are becoming thinner, rushing up. Fashion always dictates its own laws, and there is no getting away from it. However, as time shows, a good classic will outlive any fashion.

There are several home theater options in one box. There is no fundamental difference or a definite improvement in quality when using any of these options, but since there are options themselves, we will list them.

Execution first. It is most widely used in the lower price range, as it allows you to use the most versatile and unpretentious DVD players and coordinate them with the most popular 5.1 active speaker systems. Preamplifiers, a processor with multichannel sound decoders are built into the source (DVD player). That is, everything except the amplifier is in the player, and the listed components are controlled from it. And the multi-channel power amplifier itself for all channels is located in the subwoofer case, including, of course, the bass amplifier. Accordingly, passive loudspeakers themselves are already connected to the subwoofer with acoustic cables. Usually, all the cords necessary for switching a home theater are included, however, their quality often leaves much to be desired. However, the level of reproduction of these kits allows the use of medium quality cords (don't take this word negatively, I mean exactly the average level, which does not pretend to be sky-high sounding, often with sky-high prices per meter).

The second version is quite rare today. Such kits already include ready-made 5.1 low-power speaker systems. Not only the preamplifiers with the processor are located in the body of the player, the multichannel amplifier itself is also built in there. Only the bass amplifier remains built into the subwoofer, and the passive acoustics itself is connected directly to the player. As a rule, these systems have a slightly brighter and "musical" sound than the first type of kits, but this is practically not noticeable, because the amplifier built into the player is rarely of high quality.

The third version of the performance differs from the second one only in that the bass amplifier is also built into the DVD player. This somewhat reduces the cost of the kit, however, to the detriment of the quality of playback.

Of all the implementations, without a doubt, the first option is the most preferable. The evolution of "home theaters in one box" has shown that it is the most tenacious, since embedding any amplifiers in the player is a thankless task in all respects and negatively affects both design and playback quality.

To date, "home theaters in one box" are in the lead in terms of the number of audio and video formats they play. If earlier the players included in the home theater were tough only for CD-Audio and DVD formats, and Super VCD and VCD, which are almost not common in our country (they are mainly used in the East, and in Russia they have not become popular despite the proximity of the Celestial Empire), now the players play most music and video files. Without problems, modern players should play CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R media.

Increasing competition in this market segment forces manufacturers to improve the quality and reliability of the goods they represent with each new model. Many companies producing audio and video equipment, in order to promote their products on the market, are forced to come up with new tricks, and not only advertising ones, most often they have to technically improve their equipment, adding new functions to it: radio, MPEG-4 format playback, illumination of the entire front player panels, an extended menu, automatic speaker volume adjustment depending on the location, etc. As an example, we can recall the already classic symbiosis of a DVD player and karaoke. Today, only the lazy does not build a microphone input into the player, or even two, so that buyers can sing their favorite songs from the heart at home. And at one time, the presence of the karaoke function was the determining factor when choosing a player, the buyer compared the rest of the characteristics in the second place.

The greatest demand today is for relatively inexpensive sets of "home theaters in one box", their cost is from 100 to 500 dollars. There are no special technical tricks there, but these are full-featured home theaters. We will look at the most inexpensive kits, the cost of which slightly exceeds $ 200. The undisputed leader in this price range is BBK, so most of the models discussed below belong to this company. There are also "super-budget" kits from other manufacturers on the market, we also did not forget about them and considered a couple of models.

Describing specific models, we tried to note only the most striking features and advantages. We repeat, we do not expect anything magical from the sets of this price range, but we just want to find a good, solid cinema, easy to operate and with acceptable sound quality.

DK925S

Home cinema - from a to z

The simplest one-box home theater that could be invented has already been invented, the BBK DK925S. There are no tricks of the technical plan, everything is extremely simple, there is nowhere "to be more extreme". What really impresses the set is its unusual design: made in light colors, with speakers of a strange "vase" shape, it immediately attracts attention. What can not be said about the sound emanating from it, we would not recommend listening to music on it. The sound, let's say, is not the best compared to what we had to listen to in our lives, but it is quite possible to watch an unassuming movie, or better a cartoon. The main drawback is that the sound implemented in this home theater (without adding additional components) is 2.1, that is, a stereo pair with a subwoofer, by and large, this turns the home theater into a VCR. However, it costs about the same as a VCR. Accordingly, it would be wiser to buy it, given that the quality of discs is much better than the quality of cassettes. We think that such a home theater is quite suitable for a nursery.

DK929S

Home cinema - from a to z

This model is, of course, more advanced than the previous one. Here the manufacturer went a little further and assembled a full-fledged home theater. To put it bluntly, even when compared to the DK925S, the design of the DK929S is hard to attribute to its strengths. The usual unpretentious speaker cubes are quite consistent in style with the subwoofer, which is just as nondescript. But this can be attributed to the severity of forms and lines. This time it's already a normal 5.1 sound, and not a two-channel system, which, of course, cannot but rejoice. The power of the speakers and the subwoofer is not high, therefore, in order to obtain a normal volume level, it is better not to place them at a great distance from the listening position. Additional features of this home theater include karaoke, as well as radio. In principle, a completely normal solution if you are going to buy an inexpensive cinema, it is quite suitable for a small room and an unpretentious listener. The subwoofer, to be honest, is rather weak.

BBK934S

Home cinema - from a to z

Slightly more advanced model compared to DK929S. The design still fits the saying "All ingenious is simple". Functionally, it also literally repeats the DK929S, however, when listening, it makes a more favorable impression. The sound is fuller: it did not take long to affect, albeit a small, but an improvement in acoustics. The player is on the whole of the same level as the DK929 - nothing outstanding. There is, of course, the possibility of connecting a progressive scan, but people who use such benefits of civilization are unlikely to opt for a player and acoustics of this price range. A good solution for a small room. The sound is tighter, deeper lows.

LG LH-D6230

LG's model is quite interesting, it combines an amplifier with a DVD player. The design is classic silver, without frills.

Home cinema - from a to z

When watching movies, there is a little lack of power. However, this is somewhat offset by a more or less high-quality subwoofer. The rest of the sound is pleasant, quite dense. The LG LH-D6230 is quite suitable for listening to music in MP3 format, but the kit is not suitable for high-quality playback of audio CDs. Very pleased with the remote control, well-executed, functional and ergonomic.

AKIRA HTS-78 DVD

Home cinema - from a to z

Akira clearly aimed for simplicity in designing and manufacturing this home theater in one box, but it seems to have overdone it a little, resulting in just a set of even silver squares. On the other hand, such silvery squares will look pretty good in a room decorated in a minimalist style. In terms of power, this set roughly corresponds to the LG LH-D6230, maybe a little weaker. There are not enough lows, the middle ones turn out to be very convex. Listening to high-quality music is also out of the question here, you can use it to listen to MP3.

Formats:
Digital video playback in DVD, VCD, SVCD formats
Music playback in CD-DA, MP3 formats
Audio:
Audio DAC 192 kHz / 24 bit
Built-in Dolby Digital / DTS Surround decoder • 4 DSP modes (Theatre, Hall, Live, Chorus) • Prologic II music/film/stereo listening mode selection
Acoustic system:
Max Power (W)
Subwoofer 50
Front speakers 15
Surround speaker 15
Center speaker 15
Optical and coaxial digital audio outputs
Neodiode tweeter on top of each speaker
Dimensions 448 x 347 x 494
Are common:
Power supply (V; Hz)

As we warned, there are no frills and radical differences in cheap kits. How not to find and high quality playback. Home theaters in one box in this price range can be called an alternative to the VCR, that is, they provide quite normal video playback and sound reproduction at a level below average. However, there is a way for these kits, and if only for this reason, they have every right to exist. This time we will refrain from giving advice on which model to choose, the considered kits are basically equivalent, but rather we will invite you to read the third article about more expensive models in about a week: here we will have where to turn around ...
