ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING How to find coins. Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / metal detectors Having received a metal detector at their disposal, most begin with searching for coins, since this is the easiest way to work with the device. Some, however, are skeptical. Who is losing coins? Is it worth looking for them, spending time and effort on this? We answer skeptics right away - it's worth looking for! Every day people lose millions of coins, and this has been going on for hundreds of years. The number of lost coins exceeds the number of coins currently circulating. In different countries, large lots of coins are put into circulation every year to replace the lost ones. Of course, the cost of modern coins is low, but some old coins are very expensive (from $100 to several tens of thousands of dollars). Where can you find coins? The answer is simple - wherever there were people. You can look for modern coins on beaches, parks, picnic areas, etc. There are also often old coins. However, research and historical research is required to find older and more valuable coins. It is necessary to find out where people used to gather. These could be fairs, places at crossings, piers, mills, etc.
Almost any metal detector can be used to search for coins, but the most suitable are those with automatic ground balancing and good discrimination. Of the inexpensive devices, metal detectors Compadre, Silver, Conquistador, DeLeon, Tejon, Cibola, Vaquero by Tesoro have proven themselves well for this purpose. More expensive computer devices (Spectrum XLT, Spectrum DFX, Garrett GTI 1500, Garrett GTI2500, Explorer SE) have special coin search programs that allow you to ignore metal debris, even show the denomination of the coin (USA) and its depth. Garrett released in 2006 relatively cheap computer devices ACE 250 and ACE 150, which are in great demand among beginner search engines. When working, it is very useful to use headphones, especially when searching for deep and small coins, the so-called scales. As a rule, when scanning, coins give a short, clear signal when the coil is moved in any direction. If the scan produces a signal when the coil moves in only one direction, try scanning the object from a different angle. Often, you will get a normal signal, often indicating that there is some kind of garbage object near the coin. The usual scanning speed is -50 cm/s, at which the device has time to analyze the object. However, in heavily littered areas, it is desirable to reduce the scanning speed to 15–20 cm/sec. The reel can be driven directly on the ground, but it is necessary to use a protective cover on the reel. Almost all Tesoro devices (with the exception of Compadre) are currently equipped with elliptical coils. These reels have greater grip and depth and work well in trashy areas. To determine where to look, use your imagination. Imagine where people used to gather, lots of people. These could be beaches, parks, fairs and markets, schoolyards, etc. Each of these places has its own characteristics. So, on the beaches you can find a lot of modern coins. However, the beach is different from the beach, sea beaches differ from the beaches of rivers, lakes and ponds in that during a storm, pebbles and sand intensively move along the coastline. At the same time, lost coins also move, often gathering in a certain place in large quantities. River beaches are renewed in spring during high water, and therefore there are practically no coins left there. Much more coins (and jewelry) on the beaches of lakes and ponds, especially in areas covered with grass. There, coins accumulated from year to year, and if there was no one with the device before you, then you will be very lucky. Look for such places in old books, guidebooks and postcards. Many ancient coins can be found in parks and squares, which in most cities have been preserved for a long time almost unchanged. These were places of festivities and recreation, picnics on the lawns and various other events, which gathered a lot of people. It is worth looking under the big trees, in the glades near the former buffets and dance floors, along the paths where the benches stood. If you manage to find the places of the former fairs, then you will also find hundreds of ancient coins there. Often such fairs were held near churches. Nowadays, there may be some buildings or gardens in these places, the owners of which, digging up beds, wonder why there are so many coins in the ground. Drive around the surrounding villages and find out who has coins in the garden or in the garden. Most housewives, for a small fee, will gladly let you work with a metal detector in the garden in the fall. Valuable information can also be obtained from tractor drivers, who, when plowing fields, come across places with black earth and shards of dishes. Often there are also coins. A lot of coins can be found near old mills, former taverns, ferry crossings, piers, bridges, in squares near the railway stations, etc. Usually in such places, people often sat and lay on the ground while waiting and lost coins. Sometimes coins are found in the field, and in a small area you can collect dozens or even hundreds of pieces. These are plowed treasures, and they will be discussed in the section on the search for treasures.
Over time, the lost coins sink into the ground, or rather, a layer of soil grows over them due to dust, sand and rotten grass. Usually, in 80-100 years, the coin is at a depth of 2 to 20 cm. As a rule, the coins lie flat. Therefore, any metal detector confidently detects them. To extract coins, use a scoop, knife or screwdriver. First, using a probe, you can accurately determine the location of the coin. When collecting coins, do not forget to dig holes behind you. Dug out garbage (corks, nails, etc.) also collect in a separate bag and then throw it somewhere in a suitable place. Who knows, maybe, having acquired a more powerful device, you will come to this place again to harvest a new crop. Author: Bulgak L.V. See other articles Section metal detectors.
