For lovers of weekend hikes who prefer to relax on the water, a variant of an unusual light catamaran published in the Hungarian magazine "Ezermešter" will be of undoubted interest. This is a single pleasure "boat" with a rowing foot drive, which is based on two beach air mattresses. They are used without changes or any refinement, therefore they retain their traditional purpose. And in order to go on a small voyage on them - for example, go fishing or just "ride" - it is enough to lay a small wooden frame on top with an ordinary folding chair attached to it, popular with summer residents and pensioners.

Since air mattresses are purchased (ready-made) products, we will dwell in more detail on the base frame of the catamaran. It is assembled from wooden planks with a section of 40x20 mm and consists of two longitudinal supports 1700 mm long and crossbars fastening them - one front 640 mm long and two more 1100 mm each. Between themselves, the supports and crossbars are connected by furniture bolts with wing nuts - for ease of assembly and disassembly. At the same time, the front and middle crossbars are fixed flat (the first one is on top of the supports, the second one is on the bottom), and the rear one is from below and edgewise: so that it enters the transverse gap of the inflatable cylinders of each mattress. This pairing turns out to be enough to do without additional connections of the frame with mattresses (although, if necessary, it can be fastened additionally).

After the base frame is assembled, a folding chair is installed on its middle and rear crossbar and attached with metal clamps from a steel or duralumin strip.

It remains to install the aforementioned rowing drive - two foot pedals that reciprocate two blades bent twice from thick rubber from automobile cameras. The pedals are metal plates having a hinge from a window hinge, attached, in turn, to the front cross member. The plates are connected to the blades in a special way - curved (see Fig.) metal rods made of a rod with a diameter of 6 mm, the hook-shaped ends of which are screwed with M4 bolts. For ease of assembly and disassembly, the pedal loops can also be attached to the crossbar using bolts with wing nuts.

The final assembly of the catamaran is carried out in shallow water near the shore: air mattresses are laid on the water, and the frame with the chair and the drive is carefully lowered and aligned with them accordingly.

To protect the wood from excessive wetting, all frame elements are carefully impregnated with drying oil and painted in several layers with oil paints or waterproof varnish.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Spin memory STT-MRAM 23.01.2015

Spin memory STT-MRAM is free from such shortcomings of flash memory as relatively low reliability and durability, as well as relatively high power consumed when writing data. It is seen as a replacement for flash memory and DRAM

The Singapore agency A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) represented by the DSI (Data Storage Institute) and Micron Technology announced the continuation of the joint development of random access magnetic memory, which uses the effect of spin torque transfer magnetic random access memory, STT-MRAM). The original three-year cooperation agreement, signed in autumn 2011, has been extended for another three years.

A*STAR DSI capabilities and the institute's expertise in STT-MRAM helped Micron set up a research center in Singapore. At the initial stage of cooperation, the institute also shared the experience necessary for the successful manufacture of STT-MRAM chips.

Based on the successful experience of working together, the partners intend to focus on developing a low-power switching mechanism and improving the performance of STT-MRAM in the new phase. The parties hope that the cooperation will bring the new memory technology closer to commercial applications.

Recall that STT-MRAM memory is free from such shortcomings of flash memory as relatively low reliability and durability, as well as relatively high power consumed when writing data. It has such a combination of qualities that it can be considered as a replacement for flash memory and random access memory (DRAM).

Micron and A*STAR are not the only ones doing STT-MRAM development. Two years ago, Toshiba specialists managed to create an STT-MRAM memory element with the smallest power consumption in the world, and in early October of this year, TDK showed prototypes of STT-MRAM memory chips with a density of 8 Mbps. In the spring of last year, IMEC and Globalfoundries announced the expansion of cooperation in the development of STT-MRAM memory.
