Who is a seahorse? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? Who is a seahorse? Although the seahorse is a fish, very little in it resembles a fish. He has a head like a pony. Instead of scales, its body is covered with hard plates and prickly spines. And his tail looks like a snake! The seahorse even behaves differently from other fish. It usually wraps its tail around some algae to keep it from being swept away by the current. When it swims, it moves with the help of a single fin located on its back and moves through the water in an upright position. The mouth of a seahorse is shaped like a tube through which it sucks its food. Unlike other fish, it has a distinct neck and a movable, horse-like head, located at an angle to the body. The most characteristic feature of the seahorse seems to be its methods of caring for its offspring. The female pipit lays her eggs in a wide bag located under the tail of the male. Therefore, it is the father, and not the mother, who bears the eggs until the fry hatch from them. Even after the appearance of offspring from eggs, the fry remain in the father's bag for some time until they grow up enough to live on their own. Seahorses are found in almost all seas of tropical and temperate latitudes. They belong to the family of tubular fish, and their food consists of small marine organisms and eggs of other fish. The seahorse never eats carrion. There are about 50 varieties of seahorses. Their sizes can vary from 5 to 30 centimeters. Seahorses can only be seen during the summer, so they are considered summer fish. No one knows what happens to them in winter. Although the seahorse does not have too many ways to defend itself from enemies, it is quite immune from attacks. It seems that other marine fish do not like to attack or eat skates! Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: Where are the three adjacent lakes that periodically change color? At the top of the Indonesian volcano Kelimutu are three lakes, each of which periodically changes color from turquoise to green, red and black.
