How did pans help France's first composer?

Composer Jean-Baptiste Lully had a huge impact on the musical life of France. He played the violin wonderfully and became the founder of the French violin and conductor school. Lully wrote 15 operas. He is also the founder of French classical opera.

Giovanni Battista Lulli was born on November 28, 1632 in the Italian city of Florence. Already at the age of twelve, he played the guitar beautifully and composed wonderful songs. The boy's father and mother died, and he was left alone. Giovanni served in a tavern, but the owner drove him away. And the boy went where his eyes look. Tired, he sat down on a stone by the road and began to sing, accompanying himself on the guitar.

Suddenly, a luxurious carriage appeared on the road and stopped near the young singer. The Duke of Guise, one of the most distinguished nobles of France, was sitting in the carriage. The Duke liked Lully's songs and took him with him.

However, when he arrived in Paris, the duke found out that his beloved dog was ill, and completely forgot about Lully. Giovanni noticed the duke's chef.

- I just need another cook, - he was delighted and took Lully to his kitchen.

So instead of singing and playing the guitar, Giovanni had to pluck quails and pheasants all day long.

And once the king of France himself, Louis XI, who was then no more than eight years old, came to visit the Duke of Giza. There was a commotion in the kitchen as many delicious dishes had to be prepared for the king. Here Giovanni decided to sing, so that it would be more fun to work. But the chef suddenly got angry and, snatching the guitar from Giovanni, threw it into the fire. The boy cried out in despair...

And in the evening, dancing began in the palace of the Duke of Guise. During the minuet, the eight-year-old king suddenly stopped and angrily stamped his foot:

- Your musicians don't know how to play! They get off track all the time!

The violinist from the duke's orchestra was terribly afraid of the king's wrath and explained:

- I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but we are not to blame. Somewhere downstairs, another orchestra is playing, which knocks us out of the rhythm.

- Then bring these musicians here! demanded the little king.

The duke's servants brought Lully the cook:

- Your Majesty, it was he who played.

“The orchestra is me and my saucepans,” Lully explained uneasily.

The king laughed.

- Orchestra - is that you? So play us your pots. I want to listen!

The servants immediately brought from the kitchen the pots that Lully played with and the rolling pins with which he banged. Giovanni played. The gavotte sounded, the music was cheerful, sonorous, lively.

“Duke of Guise,” said the king, listening to pot music, “I want the cook to move into my palace.

And Giovanni Lulli moved into the king's palace. In the French manner, they began to call him Jean-Baptiste Lully. And twenty years later he was recognized as the first composer of France. Subsequently, he even became a personal secretary and adviser to another king - Louis XIV. But he entered the history of French music in his main capacity - as an excellent performer and composer.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Empathy prevents skepticism 15.11.2012

Even the most developed, analytical mind can accept the story of a fraudster on faith, even though it would be quite able to recognize the deception. Why is this so? Scientists at Case Western Reserve University have found that when the brain activates a network of neurons that allows us to empathize, it simultaneously suppresses the network used for analysis. And when our "internal analyst" is suppressed, the ability to soberly assess the situation and recognize the fraudster is drastically reduced.

In general, our brain activity is distributed between social drives and analytics. But when we face real-world challenges, the appropriate neural networks are activated in healthy adults. Research has shown for the first time that neurons have some "bandwidth" limitations, we can't be both empathetic and soberly analyze at the same time. The paper reports that existing theories about the competition of two neural networks in the brain should be revised. The study is published in Neuroimage.

A number of previous studies have shown that two large neural networks are active in the human brain. One of them operates "by default" at rest, and the other - in the purposeful solution of problems. However, other studies are divided on the mechanism of these activities. The first theory says that one of our networks is involved in solving problems, and the second one allows the mind to wander uncontrollably. Another theory is that one network is responsible for outward attention, while the other is for self-control.

A new study using functional magnetic resonance imaging has shown that all external stimuli - both "social" and "analytic" - sequentially occupy all neural pathways to resolve the problem. At this time, the rest of the neural pathways are suppressed.

"There is a gap between the empirical and scientific understanding of the problem, and it has long been known," said Anthony Jack, lead author of the study and assistant professor of cognitive science. - In 2006, the philosopher Filippo Robins and I put forward a completely crazy hypothesis that this "explanatory gap" is actually due to our neural structures. I was very surprised when I saw how the experimental results correspond to this theory."
