Cola brilliant (cola cultural)

Kola is the most important tonic plant used to stimulate muscle energy, excite the central nervous system and cardiac activity.

Fresh cola seeds contain 50-60% water, 10-12% cellulose, 18-25% starch, 1,5-2% tannins, 9% protein, 2% fat, 0,6-2,5% caffeine, essential oil, traces of theobromine and colatin glycoside.

The combination of caffeine, colatin and theobromine determines their effectiveness as a temporarily stimulating natural tranquilizer. It is prescribed as a liquid or dry extract and tincture. Chocolate with nuts and cola tablets are used by climbers, skiers, hikers as a tonic.

Genus Cola Schott et Endl. belongs to the Sterculiaceae family and unites about 60 species growing in tropical Asrrica, of which 51 species are in West Africa. The main cultural species is brilliant cola, or cultivated, - Cola nitida (Vent.)

In the wild, it lives in the rainforests of West Africa, in the region of 6-7 ° C. sh. with annual precipitation of 750-1750 mm and well-defined wet and dry seasons. The main production areas are the countries of the Gulf of Guinea. Annual production in Nigeria is 100 thousand tons of nuts, in Côte d'Ivoire - 30 thousand tons; Other major cola producers include Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia. For these countries, kola is one of the most profitable crops and an important export product.

In the XVI-XVII centuries. kola has been introduced to tropical regions of Central and South America and Southeast Asia.

Kola is an evergreen tree about 7-15 m high, but sometimes up to 20-25 m. The fruit is a star-shaped box, consists of 3-6 sections, each of which contains 4-10 nut seeds. Seeds are large, 5 cm long and 3 cm wide, with 2 cotyledons, sometimes up to 4-6 cotyledons; weight 10-25 g.

Grows well in light soils. Often used as a catch crop or shader in cocoa plantations.

Cola brilliant (cola cultural)

Cola grows in flushes. Periods of active growth of shoots alternate with periods of rest. The main harvest is carried out in October-December.

Cola is usually propagated by seed, although cuttings and grafting can be used. Seeds germinate slowly, seedlings appear only after 7-12 weeks. In the early years, plants develop slowly. Under normal conditions, after 4 years, they reach a height of only 1,8-3,0 m, so kola is often planted together with other crops (cocoa, coffee, etc.). By the time the kola trees have grown, these crops will already produce a good harvest. In cases where plantings are planted only from cola, it is recommended to plant special shade trees.

Direct sunlight has a depressing effect on young plants. This is because, under natural conditions, kola grows in the undergrowth of tropical forests.

Trees give the first harvest at 5 years, but stable fruiting usually occurs from 7-10 years and increases up to 20 years. Trees remain productive up to 70-100 years.

Yields vary greatly depending on soil and climatic conditions, the strength of trees and agricultural technology. In Ghana, Nigeria and Guinea, on average, trees produce over 200-300 fruits.

Harvest processing. To avoid cracking, the fruits are removed before full ripening. The seeds are extracted from the fruit, then they are fermented in heaps for 5 days, the seed coats are removed, the nuts are washed, cleaned and stored in baskets covered with green leaves for several months.

The most serious pest is the stake weevil, which damages harvested nuts.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
