Eating even small amounts of yogurt has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system, reducing the likelihood of developing a heart attack or stroke by about 17-21%, doctors from Boston University (USA) say.
“We have long suspected that long-term consumption of yogurt may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, as similar effects have been shown for several other fermented milk products. We have shown that this is indeed the case by observing a very large number of men and women with high blood pressure , whose life we have followed in some cases for more than 30 years,” says Justin Buendia from Boston University (USA).
Today, most scientists believe that diet and individual foods have a strong impact not only on a person's weight, but also on the health of his brain, blood vessels, heart and other key organs of the body. For example, recently scientists have shown that eating large amounts of olive oil and Mediterranean dishes significantly reduces the chances of dying from a stroke or heart attack, and excess salt in food, on the contrary, worsens the health of the circulatory system.
Buendia and his colleagues found that yogurt has a beneficial effect on the circulatory system by examining data collected by social and public health services through the Nurse Health Monitoring (NHS) and Health Workers (HPFS) project, which was conducted in the United States from 1980 to 2012.
In total, scientists were able to obtain data on the diet and health of more than 73 Americans in middle and old age, about four thousand of whom died during the work of these projects. This allowed Buendia and his colleagues to understand which components of their diet were associated with health risks and which prolonged life and promoted health.
As data analysis showed, the use of even small amounts of yogurt - about two servings a week - has a strong effect on the state of the cardiovascular system in both men and women.
For example, the likelihood of strokes and heart attacks in nurses and doctors decreased in such cases by about 17 and 21%. In addition, the likelihood of developing some other diseases of the heart and blood vessels decreased by 16% for women, and by 31% for men, if they ate healthy food.
Why there is such a dependence, scientists do not yet know, but they suggest that the beneficial effect of yogurt is due to the fact that it stimulates the production of nitric monoxide, which relaxes blood vessels and causes them to expand, and the enzymes contained in it can prevent the formation of cholesterol plaques on their walls. Both prolong the life of the heart and blood vessels and reduce the likelihood of developing problems with them in the elderly years of life.
