Founded in 1983, MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS is one of the world's largest companies designing and manufacturing a wide range of analog and mixed signal ICs. They say that MAXIM "connects" the real and digital world. Its devices measure, amplify and convert data from the world around us - temperature, pressure, sound - into signals understandable to a computer. The published article introduces readers to some representatives of the main families of microcircuits manufactured by MAXIM.

Let's start our acquaintance with MAXIM products with sound engineering chips. Single-channel microphone amplifiers MAX4467, MAX4468 are produced in small-sized SOT packages and operate in a wide range of unipolar supply voltage (from 2,5 to 5,5 V) with a very low current consumption (20 μA). There is a fast shutdown input to reduce power consumption to 10 nA.

The MAX4299 chip is unique in its kind. It contains a stereo amplifier designed for a load with an impedance of 16m; high-quality microphone amplifier, 0 V linear voltage regulator for codec power supply (load current - up to 3,3 mA). The "MUTE" mode (step down volume) is provided. The output stage of the microcircuit is made according to the "Rail-to-Rail" scheme (the amplitude of the output signal can reach the supply voltage). On fig. 100 shows a typical MAX1 switching circuit, an on / off cycle timing diagram and a plot of the noise filtering coefficient for the power circuit.

Audio signal amplifiers MAX4165-MAX4169 manufactured by MAXIM are designed to work with a microtelephone headset or low-power dynamic computer heads. They contain from one to four channels, have a shutdown input, are able to operate at a low voltage of a unipolar supply (from 2,7 V), and are characterized by low power consumption.

Noteworthy is the MAX4297 microcircuit - a class D stereo audio amplifier with a unipolar supply voltage of 2,7 V. It has a high efficiency (85%) and is capable of delivering up to 2 watts to a load.

MAXIM offers more than 160 varieties of operational amplifiers (op-amps). They differ in bandwidth (unity gain frequency), supply voltage, current consumption in operating mode and low power mode, the presence of rail-to-rail inputs / outputs, the number of op-amps in one package, etc. Most Op-amps are fully compatible with microcircuits from other manufacturers, but there are also those that are produced only by MAXIM. For example, MAX4289, operating at a supply voltage of 1 V (typical value of current consumption - 9 μA). This op-amp can be powered by one Ni-Cd or Ni-MH battery, its output is made according to the "Rail-to-Rail" scheme and is designed to connect a load up to 5 kOhm (minimum value).

Another example is MAX4475-MAX4478. These op-amps have the lowest (for products in the SOT-23 package) noise level - 4,5 hB / VTlj, at a frequency of 1 kHz. Microcircuits MAX4470-MAX4472 and MAX4464, MAX4474, designed for use in industrial equipment, have an ultra-low (compared to products from other manufacturers) current consumption (750 nA), a bandwidth of 9 and 40 kHz, respectively, with a unipolar supply voltage from 1,8 to 5,5 V. A typical MAX4470 switching circuit is shown in fig. 2. In the upper right corner there is a comparative diagram of the dimensions of the case and the current consumption of the MAX4470 and microcircuits of this class from other manufacturers, and in the lower right - the dependence of the power consumption of the MAX4470 on the supply voltage.

Op-amps MAX4484, MAX4486, MAX4487 with a bandwidth of 7 MHz, a Rail-to-Rail output and a unipolar supply voltage from 2,5 to 5,5 V can be widely used. These microcircuits are produced in small-sized SC-70 packages, SOT-23, TSSOR making them very suitable for battery powered wearable applications.

For automation systems and measuring equipment, MAXIM produces a series of signal amplifiers for resistive current sensors. As a rule, an external shunt is used as a sensor, with the exception of the MAX4371 microcircuit, which has a built-in sensor rated for current from 0 to 3 A. Current sensor microcircuits have a wide supply voltage range (from 3 to 32 V), low current consumption and high accuracy measurements. Some models have a built-in comparator and a reference voltage source (for example, MAX4373).

The world's first controlled OS for GSM systems - MAX4473 - was developed by MAXIM. The output of the microcircuit is made according to the "Rail-to-Rail" scheme, the supply voltage is from 2,7 to 6,5 V, the load capacity is 500 Ohm, 300 pF. The current consumption in active mode does not exceed 1,2 mA, and in standby mode - 1 μA. Switching time between operating modes - no more than 1,5 µs.

The MAX5165-MAX5168 contain 32 sample/hold modules and four multiplexed outputs. The logic of these devices allows you to combine two microcircuits to work in single mode with 64 inputs. Microcircuits have a small analog signal storage error (0,01%) in the voltage range from -4 to +8 V, the sampling rate is less than 4 μs. MAX5165-MAX5168 can be used in automation and telemetry systems, measuring equipment and medical equipment.

MAXIM also produces a wide range of chips for video equipment. Broadband video signal distributors/amplifiers have one input and several outputs (MAX4135-MAX4138 has four). Microcircuits are characterized by increased load capacity (output current up to 65 mA), high switching speed (less than 25 ns) and wide bandwidth (up to 185 MHz).

A family of broadband drivers/receivers (MAX4144, MAX4145, MAX4147, etc.) has been developed for video signal transmission over communication lines. They have a high load capacity (up to 90 mA), a wide bandwidth (up to 550 MHz) and a low coefficient of non-linear distortion (no more than 0,03%).

The number of types of broadband amplifiers, buffers, mixers for video equipment manufactured by the company is comparable to the number of types of op amps (also more than 160 microcircuits). A wide variety of functional purpose and characteristics of MAXIM chips allows them to be used in video equipment of any class.

Comparators are used no less often in REA. MAXIM manufactures comparators of its own design, fully compatible with devices from other manufacturers. Let us dwell briefly on the most interesting of them.

MAX9021, MAX9022, MAX9024 and MAX9030, MAX9031 are low-power comparators (consumption current - no more than 55 μA) in the SC-70 package. They are designed for use in industrial equipment (operating temperature range - from -40 to +125 °C).

The MAX9117 includes a 750nA comparator and a 1,245V ±2% reference voltage source. The microcircuit is capable of operating on a single voltage supply from 1,8 to 5,5 V, so it can be used to control the charging of two batteries in wearable equipment.

The original solution of the MAXIM company is the combination of an op-amp, a comparator and a reference voltage source in one chip. For example, the MAX9003 and MAX9004 have an op amp with an 8 MHz bandwidth, a comparator with a delay time of less than 185 nsec, and a reference voltage source of 1,2 V ±2%. Microcircuits operate at a supply voltage of 2,5 to 5,5 V and consume a current of 550 μA.

Improved characteristics of MAXIM chips and high quality, relatively low cost and a huge range of amplifiers, comparators and other components provide developers with additional flexibility in the design of electronic equipment. More detailed information about MAXIM products can be found on the website of its official distributor in Russia - Rainbow Technologies (< rtcs.ru>)

Chainsaw with microprocessor 01.02.2014

Husqvarna has developed smart chainsaw technology that adapts the tool to any working conditions.

The AutoTune system for automatic control and power management of the engine is distinguished by the special structure of the carburetor and the presence of a microprocessor in it, which is responsible for the operation of the main systems. Simply put, AutoTune registers and takes into account the operating conditions and mode of operation of the chainsaw: fuel quality, carburetor temperature, engine speed, air filter contamination, etc. The received information is processed by a microprocessor that regulates the carburetor fuel supply, ensures constant high engine performance and prevents overload . Such characteristics allow the efficient use of gasoline vehicles even in extreme weather conditions or with poor quality fuel, Husqvarna notes.

Activation of the system does not require special skills from the user. It occurs automatically when the saw is started. It takes 3 to 5 minutes of work under load to fully scan the source data and adjust the carburetor, after which the tool functions as efficiently as possible. In addition, AutoTune optimizes the performance of the engine during cold start, which prevents it from overloading and further breakdowns.

Another unique feature of AutoTune is the ability to connect to a PC using special software for diagnosing the condition of the saw. A similar operation can be carried out at an authorized Husqvarna dealer for an inspection or repair. The processor built into AutoTune records the history of all the main performance indicators: engine errors, the number of working hours, temperature conditions, etc. Displayed on the screen, this information allows you to accurately determine the causes of possible malfunctions or take preventive measures.

The software allows you to check the correct operation of the sensors themselves used by the system.
