As a strong oxidizing agent, ozone kills bacteria and therefore can be used, for example, for water disinfection and air disinfection. But you should know that ozone is poisonous and its maximum content in the air is 0,00001%. At this concentration, its smell is well felt.

In the device diagram (Fig. 1), an electric arc is formed on the emitter A1, through which the air flow passes. To form a uniformly distributed arc on the emitter, it is necessary to obtain a high voltage (15...80 kV) of sufficient power. This is done using a converter circuit and transformer T1. In the primary winding T1, the thyristor VS1 generates pulses due to the discharge of capacitors C1 ... C- through the winding. Controls the operation of the thyristor oscillator transistor VT1. Resistor R2 is chosen so that when the voltage across the capacitors C1 ... C- reaches 300 V (due to the charge from the network), the thyristor VS1 opens.

The device is not critical to details, and resistors may have values close to those indicated in the diagram. Capacitors C1 ... C3 - type MBM, K42U-2, for an operating voltage of at least 500 V, C4 - K73-9 for 100 V. Diodes VD1 ... VD4 can be replaced with an assembly KTs405Zh, V.

Frame for winding high-voltage transformer T1

The high-voltage transformer T1 is made on transformer iron plates assembled in a package (Fig. 2). This design eliminates the magnetization of the core. Winding is performed turn to turn: first, the secondary winding - 2 - 2000 turns with PEL wire with a diameter of 0,08 ... 0,12 mm (in four layers), then the primary - 1 - 20 turns. Interlayer insulation is best done with several layers of thin (0,1 mm) fluoroplastic tape, but capacitor paper is also suitable (it can be obtained from high-voltage non-polar capacitors).

After winding the windings, the transformer must be filled with epoxy glue. It is advisable to add a few drops of condenser oil to the adhesive before pouring and mix well.

For the convenience of pouring, it is possible to make a cardboard frame according to the dimensions of the transformer, where the sealing is performed.

A transformer made in this way provides a voltage amplitude of more than 90000 V in the secondary winding, but it is not recommended to turn it on without a protective arrester F1, since a breakdown inside the coil is possible. The protective arrester is made of two bare wires located at a distance of 20 ... 24 mm (for air, the breakdown voltage is approximately 3 kV per 1 mm of gap).

The design of the emitter A1 is shown in fig. 3. Structural elements are mounted on side plates made of plexiglass 5...10 mm thick (not shown in the figure). In the gap between the conductive plates and the glass (1 mm), a uniformly distributed arc is formed. It is clearly visible when darkened - a blue stripe and a characteristic smell.

For greater efficiency of the device, you can use any fan, for example, type VN-2 - it will speed up the air circulation in the working area of the emitter.

The described device creates a low concentration of ozone, and to freshen the air in a residential area, it needs to work for 10...20 minutes.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Light switch without wires 23.12.2002

The German company "EnIcean" is developing fundamentally new light switches that can be mounted in any convenient place.

At the same time, you do not need to pull wires to them or supply them with batteries. When such a switch is pressed in a circuit connected to a piezoelectric crystal, a current pulse appears, which powers a miniature radio transmitter. Each light source is equipped with a built-in microswitch that is triggered by receiving the appropriate coded radio signals to turn it on or off.

The range of the system reaches 300 meters, and the number of independent codes exceeds 1000. The company plans to develop battery-free key fobs of security alarm systems and air pressure sensors in car tires.
