 Comments on the article

In order to correctly perceive and use the presented material about SMD, you must familiarize yourself with the following information:

  1. The dimensions of the cases are very important, since outwardly many cases are similar to each other, and to identify the device, it is necessary to know not only the marking, but also the type of the case. But that may not save you either. So, the SOD80 case from PHILIPS has a diameter of 1.6 mm (nom.), and the case with the same name from a number of other companies has a diameter of 1.4 mm, which is even smaller than the diameter of another, more compact case from PHILIPS SOD80C. The SGS-Thomson SOD15 housing is very similar to, but does not match the 7043 and SMC housings in terms of mounting dimensions (see Table 2 in the Surface Mount (SMD) Housings chapter).
  2. Surface Mount Packages (SMD). Reference data
    There are situations when manufacturing companies place different devices in the same case under the same marking. For example, PHILIPS puts a BC323W npn transistor in a SOT818 package and labels it with the 6H code, and MOTOROLA puts a MUN6T5131 pnp transistor in the same package marked 1H. The same situation occurs within the same firm. For example, SIEMENS in a SOT23 package under the marking 1A produces BC846A and SMBT3904 transistors with different parameters. It is possible to distinguish such devices installed on the board only by the components surrounding them and, accordingly, by the switching circuit.
  3. Surface Mount Packages (SMD). Reference data
    Confusion exists not only with the marking, but also with the pinout of the cases. For example, a SOT-89 case from ROHM, SIEMENS, TOSHIBA has a 1-2-3 pinout (top view), while for PHILIPS the same case has a 2-3-1 or 3-2-1 pinout. In this book, the numbers of conclusions and their functional significance for different firms are brought to a common denominator.
  4. The situation is no better with passive components for surface mounting. If the case is labeled 103 (see chapter "Surface Mount Packages (SMD)"), it can be a 10 kΩ resistor, a 10 nF capacitor, or a 10 mH inductor. If the case is marked 2R2, then it can be a resistor with a nominal value of 2.2 Ohm, and a capacitor with a capacitance of 2.2 pF. Code 107 can mean 0.1 ohm (Philips) or 100uF (Panasonic).
  5. In cases like 0603, 0805 etc. without marking, there may be a capacitor, inductance or jumper resistor (Zero-Ohm, jumper).
  6. A colored stripe or key notch on SOD 123, D0215 cases may indicate the cathode of the diode or the positive terminal of the electrolytic capacitor.

  7. In appearance, it is very difficult to distinguish R, C and L from each other if they are in cylindrical cases with leads and are marked with colored rings. But even after identification, it may be difficult to determine its parameters. For example, in practice, several methods are used for color marking fixed capacitors (see the chapter "Capacitors. Color marking").
    Surface Mount Packages (SMD). Reference data
  8. In exactly the same cases with the same color code, a whole series of devices with different parameters can be produced. For example, MOTOROLA manufactures a whole series of zener diodes (80 devices) with a stabilization voltage from 51 to 1.8 V and a current from 100 to 0.1 A in the SOD1.7 type package, marked with one color ring. In the same package, PHILIPS produces a series of diodes.
  9. It is necessary to correctly determine the color of the marking itself. In practice, there may be difficulties with the difference between the following shades:
    gray - St. blue - silver;
    blue - turquoise - electrician;
    yellow - golden;
    orange - St. brown - tobacco - beige.
  10. The black ring in the middle of the case can have not only jumper resistors (Zero-Ohm, jumper), but also other devices, especially taking into account the technological variation when marking.
  11. Many firms, in addition to the marking principles specified in the Publications of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), use their own intra-company color and code markings. For example, there is a marking of SMD resistors when a colon is placed instead of the number 8. In such cases, the marking 1:23 means 182 kOhm, and :0R6 - 80.6 Ohm.
  12. Cases of the SOT (SOD) type - Small Outline Transistor (Diode) - literally translated means "transistor (diode) with small leads". At the present stage, not only transistors and diodes are placed in SOT cases, but also transistors with resistors, zener diodes, voltage stabilizers based on an operational amplifier, and much more, and the number of pins can be more than three. Standardization bodies do not keep up with the new developments of firms, and they are forced to introduce their new designations. For more information, see the "Enclosures" chapter.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Pollen batteries 25.02.2016

Pollen is a burden for bees and suffering for allergy sufferers. But it can also serve as an effective way for us to store energy. Researchers have figured out how to turn pollen grains into anodes, the components of batteries.

In order to turn the pollen into anodes, the scientists heated the pollen to the point where it turns into carbon using a pyrolysis process. Unlike ordinary combustion, this process takes place without oxygen, and the pollen does not ignite, but turns into biochar, which retains the shape of the pollen. Then it is heated again with the participation of oxygen, this process increases the amount of stored energy in the anodes.

The pollen anodes are designed to fill the space currently occupied by graphite anodes in typical lithium-ion batteries.

The researchers tested two different types of pollen: one collected from bees, where pollen from different plants is found, and one from reeds, which has a more uniform structure. It turned out that reed pollen has slightly higher indicators than bee pollen, but it is much easier to collect pollen from bees. In the future, the researchers plan to conduct experiments on the use of such anodes in real batteries. "We've basically created an interesting concept now," says researcher Vilas Pol. "Only further work will show how practical it will be."
