ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Electrical connectors Minifit-Jr manufactured by Molex. Reference data Encyclopedia of radio electronics and electrical engineering / Reference materials Minifit-Jr connectors provide cable-to-cable, cable-to-block and cable-to-board connections. The main area of application is power circuits, but can also be used in signal circuits. Main Specifications
These products were originally designed for household electrical appliances, so the developers paid great attention to electrical safety, increasing the resistance of connectors to moisture, pollution, as well as versatility, simplicity and ease of use. Each contact of the socket block is, as it were, inside its own nylon tube. At the same time, adjacent contacts of the pin block are also separated in its body by dielectric barriers. Thus, when the pads are connected, the adjacent contacts of the connector are separated by three insulating walls, which greatly reduces the likelihood of an intercontact short circuit when the pad bodies are dirty and wet. The connection of the connector blocks is fixed by a latch, which excludes their spontaneous separation. At the same time, a slight pressure on the latch bar makes it easy to open the connection. The contacts of the connector blocks can be mounted on the ends of the cable conductors by crimping or soldering, while the diameter and type of wire are not critical. Simplicity, convenience and reliability of "Minifit" connectors caused their rapid distribution not only in household appliances (washing machines, vacuum cleaners, etc.), but also in radio equipment, including car radios and computers of the latest models. At maximum operating current, the temperature of the connector body rises by no more than 30 ° C. The maximum operating voltage is the same for direct and alternating current. The main body material is nylon, corresponding to one of two classes (standards) - UL 94V-2 and UL94V-0. The second differs from the first in a higher rate of self-extinguishing during ignition, it resists fire longer. Contacts are made of brass, which optimally combines strength and electrical conductivity. Along with brass, phosphor bronze can also be used, which is more preferable for cases of a very large number of connections and disconnections, as well as for long-term operation of the connector at high ambient temperatures. Tin-plated contacts are most often used at currents exceeding 0,5 A, and gold-plated contacts (plating thickness up to 30 microns) are used in low-current power supply circuits and signal circuits, as well as when the connector is operating in an aggressive environment (acid vapors, etc.). .). The number of contacts in the connector varies from two to twenty-four, they are arranged in one, two or more rows. In a single-row version, connectors with a number of contacts from two to five are produced. Here we will limit the story to two-row connectors. The contacts of the block designed for mounting on boards are pressed into the housing during its manufacture. Contacts of cable and block blocks (both pins and sockets, both tin-plated and gold-plated) are stamped from sheet metal, they are supplied on a technological tape. When assembling the connector, the contacts are separated from the tape (Fig. 1). they are mounted on the cable or bundle leads and inserted into the channels of the housing of the block, while the contacts are fixed (latched) in the housing. On fig. 2 shows a drawing of the cable insert housing. It is equipped with a locking bar, which is pressed together with the body. When docking the pads, the oblique protrusion of the reciprocal pad enters under the hook of the bar and snaps into place, securely fixing the connection. The docking part of the insert consists of two rows of square tubes. Half of the tubes have two adjacent corners cut flat. The holes of the reciprocal block, where the insert tubes enter, correspond in shape and size to the tubes. This design of the docking parts of the pads serves as a kind of key that excludes the possibility of erroneous connection of the pads. The table shows the dimensions of all pad options and some other auxiliary dimensions, depending on the number of its contacts. See other articles Section Reference materials.
