Damned questions

Heinrich Heine
Heinrich Heine

Phraseologism: Damned questions.

Meaning: About the problems that constantly arise before public thought, but there is no satisfactory, generally acceptable answer to them (for example, "damned questions of Russian reality", etc.).

Origin: From the poem "To Lazarus" by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) translated (1858) by the poet, translator and critic Mikhail Larioiovich Mikhailov (1829-1865): We get direct answers." In Russia in the XNUMXth century the above four lines have been quoted very and often with the meaning: don't be blunt, don't be clever, theorize when a direct answer to a direct, unambiguous question is required. Initially, the line "And hypotheses are empty" sounded differently: M. L. Mikhailov translated Heine's line more precisely - "holy hypotheses." But due to censorship considerations, I had to put "empty hypotheses." Since only the censored version was printed in all pre-revolutionary publications, the lines became known in this edition.

Random phraseology:

Small victorious war.

Meaning:

1. Inspiring, motivating event. 2. The policy of the government, which wants to divert the attention of the country's population from the failure of its domestic policy by unleashing a "small victorious war".

Origin:

An expression used in January 1904 by Vyacheslav Konstantinovich Plehve, the Russian Minister of the Interior and chief of the gendarmes, in reference to the impending war with Japan. A. N. Kuropatkin reproached Plehve for helping to unleash the war "and joined a gang of political swindlers," Plehve replied: "Aleksey Nikolaevich, you don't know Russia's internal situation. In order to hold the revolution, we need a small victorious war." Perhaps he simply repeated US Secretary of State John Hay's "it must be a brilliant little war" (a splendid little war) from a letter to US President Theodore Roosevelt dated July 27, 1898. Roosevelt published this in his book "Description of the Spanish-American War" ( 1900).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A flight to Mars will change the human body 03.09.2022

Space medicine experts from the Australian National University have developed a mathematical model to identify the difficulties that the human body will face during a flight to Mars. The algorithm made it possible to calculate the key changes in the cardiovascular system that can occur during a long flight of six to seven months.

As a result of the study, scientists found that the main harm to the body will cause a long stay in microgravity. During a six-month flight, the structure of blood vessels and the cardiac system run the risk of significantly reorganizing under the new conditions of artificial gravity.

In such an environment, blood is not attracted to the limbs, as it is with Earth's gravity. An astronaut's heart slows down because it doesn't have to pump as much blood as it does on Earth. But the rest of the body does not expect this, and the brain thinks that too much water has accumulated in the body, because the fluid is retained in the upper body. Protective mechanisms against excess fluid come into play, through which dehydration occurs. At the same time, the expedition member himself may not even notice this.

However, it's not that terrible. The authors of the study believe that such changes will not cause major health losses, and astronauts will be able to maintain their working capacity without problems even after six months of space flight.
