Gray Cardinal

Francois Leclair du Tremblay
Francois Leclair du Tremblay

Phraseologism: Eminence grise.

Meaning: About someone who has great power, but does not occupy a corresponding high position and remains in the shadows.

Origin: France in the 1622th century this was the name of the assistant to the Cardinal (since 1585) Richelieu (1642-1624) of the Capuchin monk Father Joseph (Francois le Leclerc du Tremblay), who was the right hand of the cardinal and had a considerable influence on him, while keeping in the background. Father Joseph wore a gray cassock (hence the nickname), in contrast to his patron, dressed in a scarlet cardinal robe. In modern language, the nickname "gray cardinal" usually refers to Richelieu himself, referring to the huge influence that he had on the King of France, Louis XIII the Just (in XNUMX, Cardinal Richelieu became the head of the royal council, that is, the actual ruler of France).

Random phraseology:

Pygmalion.

Meaning:

About a person who, by the power of his feelings, makes another person spiritually reborn, "come to life" for another life.

Origin:

From ancient Greek mythology. The myth of the sculptor Pygmalion tells that he once openly declared his contempt for women. Hearing this, the goddess of love Aphrodite decided to punish him - to make him not only fall in love, but also experience the pangs of unrequited love. The goddess made Pygmalion fall in love with a stone statue he was working on at the time. The sculptor fell in love with the stone Galatea (named after the girl who served as his model), and his feeling was so strong that, obeying him, the statue came to life and the master was able to experience the happiness of mutual love. This image became especially popular after the appearance of Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion" (1913).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Remote ignition lock of a credit car 03.10.2014

In the US, cars equipped with a remote engine blocking system are becoming more and more. This technology is used by credit organizations to deal with non-payers. Today, about 2 million credit cars in this country are equipped with such devices.

While such devices have clear advantages for banks, the legality of their use remains in question, as they can be the cause of accidents with the most serious consequences.

There are at least 2 million cars on American roads today, bought on credit and equipped with remote shutdown systems. Such equipment allows you to remotely block the engine ignition and uses the same principles as modern anti-theft systems.

If the car owner has a loan debt, the device installed in the car warns the debtor with sound and light signals about the need to make the next payment under the contract. The creditor may, at his discretion, turn off the engine of the credit machine at a distance, and prevent its further use.

Since such a blockage can occur at any time, it can catch the owner indebted by surprise. In the United States, there have already been cases when the system was activated while driving a car on busy highways or during emergency trips to a medical facility.

IMETRIK, which makes remote locking devices for cars, says that their products are set to turn off the ignition only in stationary cars. IMETRIK's anti-debt devices cost about $100 and have sold over $800 in the US. Skypatrol and Passtime are the market leaders.

Some remote ignition shutdown systems are equipped with GPS modules, using which creditors can track the location of debtors' vehicles and turn off the ignition in places that are considered the safest in the city. At the same time, the installation of equipment that monitors the movement can cause dissatisfaction with car owners, since in this case we are talking about an encroachment on their privacy.

Be that as it may, for people with bad credit, the use of such remote blockers with navigation equipment is the only way to buy a car on credit. Statistics show that about a quarter of the auto loans taken out in 2013 by Americans are classified as high-risk, because. these loans were taken by people who previously had arrears in payments.
