Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Photosynthetic engine for artificial cells 28.01.2020

In an effort to create a new type of artificial cell that would mimic living cells, some researchers are focusing on the approach of creating originally artificial cells with living functions, instead of changing the genetic material of living cells.

A joint team of specialists from Harvard and Sogang University decided to follow this path, presenting their new development of an artificial cell that can reproduce absolutely all the functions and tasks of a living one - including photosynthesis, reproduction and the formation of a cytoskeleton in the process of its growth.

In the process of creating such an artificial cell, experts were able to activate its metabolism through light activity and a special protein structure embedded in it. However, this is only the first step in building truly complex and complex artificial cells with the functions of living things, which will certainly find application in many areas of human scientific activity.

As for the very structure of such a cell, the experts applied the traditional protein approach here - by combining two protein photoconverters obtained from photosynthetic organelles of plants and animals. Being exposed to light activity, these photoconverters generate a certain energy gradient, which starts the process of artificial cell metabolism.

At the same time, specialists managed to create a truly stable type of artificial microorganism through the implementation of additional protein structures and chemical interaction products - thus, the resulting artificial cell really became like a living one.
