The discharge ignition voltage between the anode and cathode in an MTX-90 thyratron, with a free grid, is 150-320 V. But if a voltage is applied to the grid in order to excite the grid current, then this discharge ignition voltage can be significantly lowered.

With a grid current of 60 μA, for example, it is possible to lower the ignition voltage along the anode circuit by 50-80 V. This determines the rather high sensitivity of the photorelay, the circuit of which is shown in the figure.

Photorelay on MTX-90

From the divider R1R2, the voltage rectified by the diode D1 is fed through the resistor R1 and the winding of the electromagnetic relay P1 to the anode of the thyratron. The same voltage is also applied to the grid power circuit, consisting of the FSK-1 photoresistor and the R5 potentiometer. Capacitor C1 smooths out the ripple of the supply voltage.

In the initial state, the voltage at the thyratron anode is lower than the ignition voltage. There is no current in the anode circuit and the relay does not work. When the photoresistor is illuminated, its resistance decreases sharply, the current through the potentiometer R5 increases, which leads to an increase in the grid voltage to the value of the discharge ignition voltage between the grid and the cathode. The thyratron ignites and relay P1 is activated. The voltage at the anode of the thyratron decreases, but remains above the burning voltage. Therefore, the relay armature is confidently held in the attracted state.

The photorelay is switched off by the Kn button, the electromagnetic relay.

Any electromagnetic relay with a response current of 10-15 mA can be used in the photo relay. The resistance of the resistor R3 is selected depending on the resistance of the relay winding. Kn1 button with normally closed contacts can be of any type.

When setting up a photorelay with potentiometer R5, the voltage on the thyratron grid is gradually increased until the relay operates without exposure to light on the photoresistor, and then this voltage is slightly reduced. This will be the most stable mode of operation of the photorelay.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Global Fresh Water Survey 28.07.2022

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will survey more than 95% of the Earth's lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

Researchers are able to measure water levels in only a few thousand lakes on the planet and have little to no data on the planet's important river systems.

But this problem has been solved thanks to a collaboration between the French space agency Center National d'Etudes Spatial (CNES), involving the Canadian Space Agency and the United Kingdom Space Agency, according to NASA, which is also involved in the collaboration.

The SWOT satellite is scheduled to launch this November from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Engineers and technicians are currently finalizing SWOT at Thales Alenia Space in Cannes, France.

This will help to better understand the Earth's water cycle and contribute to better management of water resources, as well as increase knowledge about how climate change affects lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

SWOT can measure more than 95% of the Earth's lakes larger than 6 hectares and rivers larger than 100 meters wide.

Over the ocean, the satellite will be able to "see" elements such as eddies for less than 100 kilometers.
