Giant tortoises have extra copies of genes involved in what is known as apoptosis, according to a study by scientists at the University at Buffalo in the US. This is a cell self-destruction process that protects turtles from the damaging effects of aging, including cancer.

Laboratory tests conducted on the giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands confirmed the presence of a similar defense mechanism in these animals.

As the researchers note, when exposed to such stress, the cells of the Galapagos tortoise self-destruct much more easily than the cells of other species of turtles. What cells are destroyed before they have a chance to create a tumor. This helps prevent the development of cancer.

“These results are also of great interest because the long-lived fauna should have the highest incidence of cancer.
