Employees of the Center for Technical Research at the University of Kuopio, Finland are developing a system that turns a mobile phone into your personal nutritionist.
With a digital camera now found in most mobile phones, you take a picture of the barcode printed on every package in the grocery store.
The phone sends this snapshot to the central computer, and in a few seconds data on the composition of the product and its energy value appear on the phone's screen. After that, the phone, based on the owner's personal data entered into it in advance (height, weight, age, and so on), shows how much and what physical exercises you need to do in order to burn the calories in the product. And then it's your decision to buy or not.
Field trials have been completed and the system should be operational in Finland in a year and a half.
