14. Traditional medicine

ethnoscience - This is the oldest branch of medicine in the history of Russia. In fact, its roots were paganism, which was practiced by the Slavic tribes before the unification and creation of the state and before the adoption of Christianity. Thus, the moment of the birth of traditional medicine can be attributed to the time from which the historical description of the life of the Russian people begins, i.e. to prehistoric times. With the adoption of Christianity, it was not eradicated, it has survived more than a thousand years of historical life of the people, and even in our time it continues to develop, is widely used in practice by those people who master this art, and sometimes come into conflict with scientific medicine.

In our time, there are a fair number of cases where scientific medicine turned out to be powerless in the face of some case of disease, even though it had reached the highest theoretical and practical development and technical equipment. And there were cases when a person was literally “pulled out of the coffin” and restored to health by people skilled in traditional medicine. With the development and growth of the Russian state, traditional medicine until the second half of the 19th century. remained the only way to treat diseases and maintain the health of ordinary people, since there was no more accessible medical care. The situation changed in the second half of the 19th century, when the first zemstvo institutions and zemstvo medicine itself appeared.

No one can explain why, but concern for the health of the entire Russian people was of little interest to the rulers of the Russian land for a very long time. They existed until the end of the 17th century. only “sovereign doctors” who treated the sovereign, his family and especially close persons. Peter I tried to change the situation, but did not achieve radical changes, making medicine accessible to privileged segments of the population.

Only Alexander II, who abolished serfdom in 1861 and carried out a large number of changes in all spheres of life of Russians, became the author of the first steps towards the availability of medical care, carried out zemstvo reform and introduced zemstvo medicine.

Since its inception, healing has differed from other types of medicine in that it combines knowledge of the healing properties of natural remedies and faith in miraculous powers.

Folk healers knew how to perform bloodletting, craniotomy, and also treat injuries (apply splints) and wounds using various ointments and cauterization.

Traditional healers compiled treatises on the use of the healing powers of nature - herbalists and physicians. This became especially widespread after the adoption of Christianity and the advent of writing. Unfortunately, we inherited only a small fraction of those sources, since most of them were lost or stolen during the wars. It is interesting that in the books that have come down to us there are means that were used not only after the adoption of Christianity, but also long before it.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Dogs also cry for joy 25.08.2022

For a long time it was believed that tears of joy or sadness are peculiar only to people and that animals do not cry. But now Japanese researchers have conducted a series of experiments involving man's best friend and found that dogs can also cry for joy.

When reunited with their owners after a day's absence, dogs don't just whine with joy, they also cry with excitement, scientists say.

Among 18 dogs, the researchers found a 10% increase in tear volume (compared to normal wetness) when the dogs greeted their owners. Tear drops were measured by placing an absorbent piece of paper over the dog's eye for 60 seconds and recording how far the moisture penetrated.

It is positive emotions that cause additional tears in dogs. When a solution containing the "love hormone" oxytocin (also associated with feelings like trust, empathy and relationship building) was added directly to the eyes of 22 dogs in another experiment, the researchers found that the amount of tears increased.

The researchers concluded that an increase in oxytocin levels (say, from greeting a loved one) may be causing additional tear production in dogs.

"We had never heard of the discovery of animals shedding tears in joyful situations such as reunions with their owners, and we were all excited that this would be a world first!" says animal behaviorist Takefumi Kikusui of Azabu University in Japan.
