90. PRODUCT BAR CODING

Bar code - the code assigned to each specific unit of goods, which is characterized by price, size, weight, color, quality, is identified by assigning a bar code to it.

In international trade, bar coding has long been the norm. An EAN barcode is a 13-digit or 8-digit numeric code, which is a combination of bars and spaces of different widths. In this case, the narrowest stroke or gap is taken as a unit of thickness - the module. Other strokes and spaces make up two or three modules, that is, two or three thicknesses of the narrowest stroke or space.

Each digit is a combination of two dashes and two spaces. At the beginning and end of the barcode there are elongated edge strokes that indicate the beginning and end of the code reading, and in the center there are central elongated strokes that facilitate visual verification of the completeness of the code entry.

The 13-bit product code includes the country code, the code of the product itself, and the control number. The country code is issued centrally by the EAN association (for example, China - 690, Poland - 590). The next five digits, i.e., the manufacturer's code, are assigned by the national authority of the country (in Russia - UNISCAN) to a centrally specific manufacturer. The next five digits of the code are assigned by the manufacturer of the goods independently. The last digit - the digit - is a check number, which is designed to verify the correct reading of the bar code by the scanner.

The 8-digit code is intended for small-sized products. It consists of a country code, a manufacturer code and a check number.

Rules for placing barcodes on packages and labels:

1) each product must have only one code;

2) the code must be on the back of the package in the lower right corner at a distance of at least 20 mm from the edges;

3) the barcode must be dark in color, since the scanner does not distinguish colors, and must be printed on a light background.

Benefits of using bar coding:

1) the presence of a barcode allows you to determine the importing country, the manufacturer, as well as the specific product number, which makes it possible, if necessary, to make a claim to the manufacturer;

2) the use of a bar coding system makes it possible to refuse from numerous paper documents reflecting such information as the production of products, their technical characteristics, the collection of customer orders, accounting for the receipt of goods, their acquisition;

3) accounting and control of the sale of goods;

4) control of goods in the warehouse of the store;

5) increases the competitiveness of the product, increases the demand for it. In a number of developed countries, the absence of bar codes makes the sale of products almost impossible, since they cannot accept it from the manufacturer;

6) the use of bar codes makes it possible to organize effective control over the passage of goods, starting from the manufacturer and ending with the warehouse of the store, as well as to carry out electronic exchange of data on goods between trading partners, which speeds up the movement of goods to the consumer.

The application of a bar code does not increase either the time spent on the production of a product or its cost.

Latest news of science and technology, new electronics:

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Biochemistry for automotive fuel 24.04.2015

On the roads, you can increasingly see cars that use gas instead of gasoline. These are mainly commercial vehicles - trucks or buses, for which it is more economical to drive on gas. Inside the red cylinders marked "flammable" is usually propane gas or a mixture of it with other hydrocarbons, such as butane.

All these hydrocarbons are obtained by processing gas or oil extracted from the bowels of the earth, which mankind has learned to use as fuel or as a raw material for the production of all kinds of plastics. Recently, however, technologies for obtaining fuel from biological raw materials have been widely developed. But if terms like bioethanol or biodiesel have been around for a long time, what about "biogas"?

They learned how to get methane from biological waste - the simplest of a number of hydrocarbons. For this, special bioreactors are used. In them, special types of bacteria process biomass, resulting in a mixture of gases, consisting mainly of the methane we need. Then it can be cleaned of impurities, pumped into special containers under pressure and used as fuel. Such a process has been created, worked out and there are already buses that run on biogas. However, there is one problem, and it lies in the difference in the properties of methane from heavier gases.

The fact is that propane and butane can be converted into a liquid state at ordinary temperature and relatively low pressure. Take, for example, an ordinary household lighter - a thin case made of transparent plastic is enough to safely store liquefied hydrocarbons. But this will not work with methane - in order to convert methane into a liquid, it will have to be cooled to a temperature of - 82 ° C. Therefore, in order to stock up on the necessary amount of methane, one has to use a container that can withstand a pressure of several hundred atmospheres.

This makes methane a much less convenient transportation fuel than propane. However, if bacteria that can synthesize methane exist, then everything is much more sad with the synthesis of complex hydrocarbons: in nature there are no such biological processes that would result in the formation of propane.

Researchers from the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Manchester have tackled this problem and come up with a way to make biopropane. To do this, they artificially changed the biochemical process by which the E. coli bacterium can produce alcohol - butanol. Butanol or butyl alcohol differs from the well-known ethyl alcohol in the length of the carbon chain - it has four carbon atoms, and not two, like ethanol. Biochemists managed to change the direction of the process so that propane was obtained in the last stage of the reaction instead of butanol.

Of course, so far this is nothing more than a laboratory study that has shown a way in which complex hydrocarbons of biological origin can be obtained. However, it has a chance to become the basis of an alternative way to obtain efficient fuel.
