11. Methods for detecting pathological conditions of the eye

Gonioscopy (from the Latin gonia "angle") is a special method for studying the angle of the anterior chamber. It can only be carried out using optical instruments, gonioscopes. The study of the chamber angle is of great importance for the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of a number of diseases (glaucoma, uveitis, trauma, etc.). The most important route for the outflow of intraocular fluid begins from the corner of the chamber. The angle may be narrowed, obliterated, foreign bodies or a growing tumor may be found in it.

Tonometry is a necessary study in all cases when there is a thought that the patient has glaucoma, secondary eye hypertension or hypotension, in various general and local diseases.

Approximate pressure in the eye can be determined by palpation. In this case, it is necessary that the patient looks down, and the researcher, with his index fingers located above the level of the cartilage, takes turns pressing through the upper eyelid (when looking up through the lower) on the eyeball (similar to examining the fluctuation of an abscess). When analyzing pressure, it is necessary to compare its value in one and the other eye.

If the ophthalmotonus is within normal limits, it is designated as TN if its value is 2835 mmHg. Art. T + 1, more than 36 mm T + 2, if hypotension of about 1522 mm Hg is detected. Art. T 1, less than 12 mm Hg. Art. T 2.

For the quantitative determination of ophthalmotonus in Russia, the Maklakov tonometer is most widely used.

Tonography is a method for studying the hydrodynamics of the eye. It allows you to determine the state of the outflow of intraocular fluid and is used mainly when examining patients with glaucoma or when it is suspected. The degree of reduction is different in healthy individuals and in patients with glaucoma, which is reflected in the nature of the tonographic curve. Graphic registration of changes in ophthalmotonus becomes possible by connecting a recording device. Data is recorded on a moving paper tape.

To study the optical system of the eye, measure the anteroposterior and other dimensions, the method of ultrasound echo-ophthalography is used. It consists of recording ultrasonic signals reflected from the interfaces between the media and tissues of the eye with different acoustic properties.

Studies are carried out on the diagnostic device echo-ophthalograph.

Ultrasound examination is also used to detect foreign bodies in the eye, for the purpose of diagnosing retinal detachments, tumors, etc., especially in cases where examination of the fundus of the eye is impossible due to clouding of the transparent media.

If a patient has exophthalmos or enophthalmos (protrusion or retraction of the eyeball), special devices are used to quantify them and judge the dynamics of the process (orbital tumor, retrobulbar hematoma, fracture of orbital bones, etc.). The most common is a mirror exophthalmometer.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

Light travels forward and backward in time at the same time 11.02.2023

By separating a photon using a special optical crystal, two independent teams of physicists have achieved what they call a quantum time flip, in which the photon exists in both a forward and backward time state.

The effect arises from the convergence of two strange principles of quantum mechanics that contradict certain rules. The first principle, quantum superposition, allows tiny particles to exist in different states or different versions of themselves at the same time, as long as they are not observed. The second principle, the symmetry of charge, parity, and time reversal (CPT), states that any system containing particles will obey the same physical laws, even if the particle charges, spatial coordinates, and motions in time are reversed, as in a mirror.

By combining these two principles, physicists created a photon that seemed to simultaneously move along and across the arrow of time.

"The concept of the arrow of time gives a word to the apparent unidirectionality of time that we observe in the macroscopic world in which we live. In fact, this contradicts many fundamental laws of physics, which are generally symmetrical in time and therefore do not have the best direction of time" - noted Theodor Stremberg, a physicist from the University of Vienna.

Scientists created their time-reversed photon out of intellectual curiosity, but further experiments showed that time could be coupled with inverse logic gates to enable simultaneous computation in either direction, thus paving the way for quantum processors with vastly increased processing power.

The scientists say a future theory of quantum gravity that combines general relativity and quantum mechanics should include particles with mixed time orientations, as in this experiment, and could allow researchers to look into some of the most mysterious phenomena in the universe.
