Sugar Palm (Gomuti Palm, Pinnate Arenga), Arenga saccharifera. Methods of application, origin of the plant, range, botanical description, cultivation

Sugar Palm (Gomuti Palm, Pinnate Arenga)

Palm sap is used to make palm sugar, palm wine (toddy), vinegar or alcohol. The resulting palm juice is a colorless transparent liquid containing up to 12-17% sucrose.

In fresh palm sap under tropical conditions, the process of inversion quickly begins under the influence of invertase. Therefore, palm juice must be boiled as soon as possible.

The product of juice boiling is gur, the yield of which is 10% by weight of the juice. Gur is a mixture of rather large sugar crystals with intercrystalline syrup (sucrose - 50-75% and reducing sugars - 5-16%). Gur can be whitewashed, washed and dried. This produces a purer product (acres), which is either marketed or further refined.

Sugar Palm (Gomuti Palm, Pinnate Arenga)

Sugar palm - Arenga saccharifera Labill., syn. Arenga pinnata (Wutmb.) Merr. The production of palm sugar has been developed and has existed for more than 200 years in areas of Central India, on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Moluccas and Philippine. There are few statistics on the production of palm sugar, since palm sugar is exported in small quantities. During transportation and storage, it is subject to rapid decomposition under the action of gluten into sucrose.

Grows wild in Southeast Asia. This is a typical forest type of monsoon climate. Various botanical palm species can be used to produce sugar. The sugar palm is a typical plant of the tropics. In temperate countries. Sugar palm is common between about 20 ° C. sh. and 10°S sh. and between 95-130° E. d.

Sugar palm - Arenga saccharifera Labill., syn. Arenga pinnata (Wutmb.) Merr. - is both a cultivated and wild species of the genus Arenga.

Sugar Palm (Gomuti Palm, Pinnate Arenga)

The sugar palm is a tree that reaches a height of 12-15 m with a trunk diameter of up to 0,4 m. Its dense crown is formed by pinnate leaves up to 6 m long. The sheaths of the leaves grow together with the trunk and are dressed with a dark fibrous mesh.

The trunks of the sugar palm are densely covered with the bases of leaf petioles, since older leaves do not separate directly from the trunk, but break off at some distance from the point of attachment. Between them and in the intervals between the fibers of the mesh covering the trunk, various particles accumulate over time, mainly the remains of dead plant tissues, which leads to the settlement of epiphytes here. Therefore, the trunks of sugar palms look unkempt.

Inflorescences drooping; female and male flowers are collected in different inflorescences, but develop on the same plant. Only male inflorescences are suitable for obtaining palm juice. The first inflorescences are formed at the very top of the trunk, as the palm ages, they appear below.

Sugar Palm (Gomuti Palm, Pinnate Arenga)

Before flowering, the main axis of the inflorescence or all of its lateral branches are cut, the juice with sugars dissolved in it is collected in vessels, and then boiled down to crystalline sugar.

The fruits of the sugar palm are about the size of a plum, slightly flattened, light green when ripe, yellow and yellow-brown when ripe. The pulp of the fruit is sweet, and therefore the fruit is one of the favorite treats of children.

In large areas, the sugar palm is not cultivated. Collecting juice for sugar production is possible only from an 8-10-year-old tree. 1-150 palm trees are placed on 200 hectare of plantation and, when harvested, they receive from 4 to 20 tons of sugar from 1 hectare per year.

Sugar palm begins to bloom after 6-12 years of growth. By the beginning of flowering, abundant sugary juice enters the inflorescences. From one inflorescence collect up to 5-7 liters of juice per day for 2,5 months.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Car projector understands gestures and human speech 16.08.2014

California-based startup Navdy has developed a projection system of the same name that can be used in all cars. Unlike other similar Head-up-Display (HUD) products, the novelty not only displays useful information, such as navigation tips and current speed, but also allows you to control some smartphone functions using voice and gestures.

The compact Navdy device, controlled by a dual-core processor and operating system Android 4.4, is mounted on the steering column in front of the driver. The projector displays a high-resolution image on a 5,1-inch transparent screen, which is not located on the windshield, like the Garmin HUD model, but on the device itself. At the same time, the person driving sees an image that seems to be at a distance of about two meters from his eyes.

Navdy, connecting to the on-board computer via the OBD-II diagnostic connector (available on all modern cars), projects the current speed, fuel level, power reserve and other regular information. This gadget can act as a navigator. For this, synchronization with an iPhone or Android smartphone is available wirelessly (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n or Bluetooth 4.0).

Navigation is carried out using the Google Maps service, but in the future the developers promise to add support for other mapping services such as Waze and Apple Maps. Instructions with driving directions for drivers are clearly drawn and are not removed during an incoming call or message.

Information about the caller is also displayed on the projection surface. With a movement of the hand, the car owner, without being distracted from driving the car, can accept the call or reject it. The built-in infrared camera is responsible for gesture recognition. Incoming messages can be read aloud or set to only appear on the display when the vehicle is at a complete stop.

Navdy also has voice control built on the popular Apple Siri and Google Now services. With the help of voice commands, you can dial a subscriber's number, control the audio system, set a route, dictate an SMS message or a note for a Twitter blog. At the same time, the microphone is equipped with DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology to suppress unwanted noise.

The device can be used comfortably while driving on rough roads: image stabilization is provided by an accelerometer and an electronic compass. The built-in light sensor will automatically adjust the brightness of the picture depending on the intensity of ambient light.
