Why are Barcelona fans called assholes?

In the 1910s, the stadium where the Barcelona football club played its matches could not accommodate everyone, and some of the fans sat right on the fence. Passers-by on the street saw a dense row of their fifth points, so they called the fans "kules", which literally translates as "ass". This nickname has stuck with Barça fans to this day.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is an observatory?

Thousands of years ago, astronomers must have used the Egyptian pyramids and the towers and temples of Babylon to study the sun, moon, and stars. There were no telescopes then. Over time, astronomical instruments appeared, and as their size and number increased, observatories began to be built to accommodate them. Some observatories were built over a thousand years ago. The place for the construction of the observatory must be correctly chosen. There should be favorable weather conditions, moderate temperatures here, there should be many sunny days and cloudless nights, as little as possible fogs, rains and snowfalls. This place should be away from city lights and neon advertisements, which illuminate the sky too much and interfere with observations.

There are buildings in which, in addition to telescopes, there are living quarters. The instruments are housed in steel and concrete structures. Buildings for the installation of telescopes consist of two parts. The lower part is fixed, while the upper, or roof, is shaped like a dome that can rotate. There is a "slit" in the dome that opens up to allow the telescope to look up into the sky. Due to the rotation of the dome, the slit can be opened in the direction of any part of the sky. Both the dome and the telescope are moved by electric motors. In a modern observatory, an astronomer only needs to press a few buttons to move the equipment.

Of course, in order to see, the astronomer must always be at the eyepiece, or a camera must be fixed there. Therefore, in some observatories, the floor can be raised or lowered, or there is an adjustable platform. Astronomers rely on more than just their eyes to observe the sky. They have many sophisticated instruments and accessories for the telescope, such as cameras, spectroscopes, spectrographs and spectroheliographs. All these devices provide scientists with important information.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

poison against poison 13.09.2003

Two well-known toxic substances - benzopyrene and tributyltin - can serve as an antidote to one another. This conclusion was made by biologists from the Institute for the Study of the Sea at the University of Quebec (Canada).

Benzopyrene, found in tobacco smoke, for example, is a powerful carcinogen. More precisely, in the body it turns into such under the action of one of the enzymes. Tributyltin is an organic tin compound that is poisonous to marine animals, and especially to their larvae. This substance is added to the paint for the underwater part of the hull of ships so that they are not overgrown with mollusks, worms and corals.

It turned out that tributyltin inhibits the activity of the very enzyme that turns benzopyrene into a carcinogen. In turn, benzopyrene reduces the toxicity of tributyltin. This was found in experiments with fish, in aquariums to which one of the substances or both were added at once.

The discovery may have practical implications for medicine.
