Explosive reagent

A substance has been created that quickly changes color when it comes into contact with vapors of liquid explosives. Using hydrogen peroxide, you can make an explosive liquid at home in the kitchen, which will serve as a detonator for a homemade bomb.

In 2001, they tried to carry a bomb with such a fuse on board the aircraft, after which they began to check the contents of tubes, bottles and vials from all passengers, or even take them away altogether. That's why Dr. Allen Arblet, a chemist at the University of Oklahoma, specifically targeted peroxides.

He made a preparation containing nanoparticles of the molybdenum compound. In the initial state, the preparation is blue, and after interaction with peroxide vapor it becomes yellow or colorless. The sensitivity of the Arblet reagent is very high - in just 30 seconds it recognizes peroxide at a concentration of 50 parts per million. Moreover, the drug can also neutralize explosives - if it is sprayed onto a dangerous object until the color stops changing.

The creator of the reagent believes that the invention will find application not only in the fight against terrorism, but also in chemical laboratories - the addition to solvents will help to avoid the accumulation of explosive peroxides. Confident of the success, Arblet and his colleagues have already set up a reagent company and hope to see their blue paint on the walls of airport checkpoints in the coming year. Maybe then respectable passengers will have fewer problems.

An ocean could be hiding under the surface of Pluto's moon 22.02.2016

Specialists from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) believe that in the distant past, a vast subsurface ocean could have existed on Charon.

Charon is the largest known moon of Pluto. This moon was discovered in 1978. The diameter of Charon, according to modern estimates, is 1205 km - a little more than half the diameter of Pluto itself.

The possible existence in antiquity of the ocean under the surface of Charon is evidenced by the images transmitted to Earth by the automatic station New Horizons ("New Horizons"). The fact is that the satellite of Pluto is dotted with crevices, cliffs and ledges. So, not far from the equatorial zone of Charon there is a strip of canyons with a length of about 1800 km and a depth of up to 7,5 km. Due to the features of the relief in this area, it seems that the outer layers of the satellite were stretched and torn as a result of some kind of impact.

Scientists believe that in ancient times the temperature of Charon was high enough that an ocean of liquid water could exist under the surface. However, as the satellite cooled, the water froze, expanding along the way, which led to the formation of canyons.
