You certainly know what an escalator is. This is a moving staircase. Escalators are arranged at metro stations and in large stores. Millions of people use them daily. The escalator is convenient, reliable, safe. But still...

They say that once such an incident happened. One rotozei descended on the escalator, holding a trough in his hands. He held this trough, held it and dropped it. The trough rushed down like a sledge from a mountain. Picked up speed and hit under the knees of a fat man with purchases. The fat man collapsed like a wreck. Where did it crash? Yes, in the trough, of course!

He fell into the trough like a dime in a bottle, like a hard-boiled egg in a glass of water. And it was inertia that was to blame. After all, if the fat man had not sought to maintain a state of rest, he would have set in motion instantly and would have rolled not in the trough, but in front of him.

But inertia did its job. And the poor fat man, helplessly waving his arms and legs, rushed up the steps with a thunder and scared all the passengers. And when the escalator ended, the trough with a squeal and a rattle drove a few more meters along the granite floor slabs. And only after that the fat man was taken out of the trough, like a baby from the cradle ...

Adventure on the escalator

I don't know if this story actually happened. She's too funny. But if it happened, it would be exactly the same. Everything to the very end - until the solemn departure of the fat man in the trough from the escalator. After all, the same thing happened here that happens to you on the bus when it brakes sharply. The movement of the bus stops, as the movement of the escalator, which has gone under the floor, has stopped. And you still continue to move, you fly forward, like a fat man in a trough!

What is inertia? Yes, this is also inertia. Only not the inertia of rest, but the inertia of motion. It turns out that the body tends to maintain a state of rest only if it is already at rest. But if the body is moving, then it tends to continue its movement.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Apple moves computers to its own processors 24.06.2020

Apple is developing a proprietary system-on-a-chip based on the common ARM architecture with a number of unique features specifically for the Mac. The first computer with the new platform will be presented before the end of the year.

As part of the WWDC 2020 conference, Apple officially announced the transfer of its computers to proprietary processors. CEO Tim Cook called it "a historic moment for the Mac platform." The company is reportedly developing its own system-on-a-chip based on a common ARM architecture with a number of unique features specifically for Mac.

The first computer with the new platform will be presented before the end of the year. The transition of the entire family of "apple" computers to processors of their own design will be carried out within two years. Apple promises that with this solution, Macs will be able to rise to new levels of performance and energy efficiency.

The most important difference between Apple's new ARM processors and Intel's solutions currently used by the company lies in native support for iOS and iPadOS applications, which will make the work of software developers easier and more efficient. Microsoft and other software vendors are already working on adapting their solutions to the new Apple processors.
