It is known that many animals have magnetoreception (the ability to sense a magnetic field). First of all, these are migratory species of birds and fish, which the "built-in compass" helps to travel. In recent years, magnetoreception has been found in lobsters, worms, snails, frogs, and newts.

Wood mice and mole rats place their nests according to the direction of the earth's magnetic field, while cows and deer orient their bodies along it when they graze.

American geophysicist Joe Kirschvink (Joe Kirschvink) from the California Institute of Technology experimentally proved the ability of a person to feel the direction of the magnetic field.

The experiments were carried out in an underground laboratory: a volunteer entered a room with magnetic shielding, the walls of which were made of aluminum (the so-called Faraday cage), where there was a system of rectangular coils arranged in three perpendicular directions (the Merritt system) that created a uniform magnetic field. This arrangement of the coils allows, by changing the amount of current in them, to control the direction of the magnetic field. A possible reaction of the brain to a magnetic field was caught using electroencephalography (EEG): a change in alpha waves, visible on the EEG, should have indicated new sensations.

Within an hour, several tests were performed: in some cases, a magnetic field, approximately equal in magnitude to the earth's field, slowly rotated around the head, in others, only the natural geomagnetic field acted on a person. The tests were alternated randomly, so that neither the experimenter nor the subject knew which test was currently taking place.

It turned out that when the magnetic field rotated counterclockwise (as if the subject was looking to the right), then the alpha waves weakened sharply, and the same thing happened when the magnetic field deviated downward (corresponding to looking up). Why alpha waves react precisely to such movements of the magnetic field and do not react to movements in the opposite direction is not yet clear, but perhaps this indicates the polarity of our "magnetic compass".
