In recent decades, the world has experienced a cycling boom. A bicycle today on the planet is the number one vehicle, even a car is inferior to it: for every four-wheeled car, there are two two-wheeled ones.

The bicycle does not pollute the atmosphere and improves health. The author, in the past an avid motorcyclist and motorist, has long moved to a bicycle. Every year I "wind" one and a half to two thousand kilometers and I feel great!

The regular road bike I ride is fine with me. It is strong, easy to move, reliable and durable. However, all its advantages fade as soon as I go up with it to the platform to the train. And it’s really bad in the subway: you have to remove the front wheel, but where to put it and what to do with a protruding fork ?! Finally, a bulky road builder is also inconvenient in an apartment.

Typically, a folding bike has two connectors in the vertical plane: one on the horizontal tube of the frame, the other on the inclined one. There are many options for hinges for such connectors. My task was to develop the most simple. I settled on a loop-type design with a constipation in the form of a conventional bolt with a nut, which can always be replaced in case of loss or wear of the thread.

The device and operation of the hinges is easier to understand from the figures. Of course, even such simple units cannot be made at home, so I ordered them from a workshop that had lathes and milling machines. The material for the parts was the usual structural steel 35.

Frame marking: 1 - cut line; 2 - upper hinge; 3 - lower hinge

Upper hinge (click to enlarge): 1 - hinge axis; 2 - front cheek; 3 - back cheek; 4 - split sleeve; 5 - bolt, nut M8

Lower hinge (click to enlarge): 1 - hinge axis; 2 - front cheek; 3 - back cheek; 4 - split sleeve; 5 - bolt, nut M8

While my order was being fulfilled, I was reworking the frame. It is clear that it is better to fold the bike in half. However, if you cut the frame along a line equidistant from the axes of rotation of the wheels, then the axes will rest against each other and the bike will not be compact when folded. Therefore, I shifted the cut line by 50 mm towards the steering wheel so that the lower hinge was away from the drive sprocket and it did not interfere with the frame to fold freely. The design of the hinges provides for folding the bike from left to right (clockwise). In this case, the dirty chain is hidden between the wheels.

I soldered the hinges to the frame with brass using a gas burner. I used borax as a flux. Those who want to simplify this procedure can use M6 bolts with nuts instead of soldering. And for this, drill holes in the bushings of the hinges together with the frame pipes, after checking the correct installation of the hinges. Only during operation will you sometimes have to check and tighten the nuts. But if you rivet the protruding ends of the bolts, then you don’t have to tighten anything.

Folding my bike is simple: I unscrew two nuts on the hinges, move the steering wheel clockwise until the frame folds in half. After loosening the fixing nut, I turn the steering wheel 90 °. In this position, I fix the parts of the bike with a strap so that they do not move apart. And I return the hinge nuts to their place so that they are not lost.

Now I have no problems with the road builder. He folded it in half, placed it in a case made of dense fabric (no more than 1x1 m in size), tightened the braid on the neck - and get on your train or go down to the subway. Comfortable!

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Artificial mother of pearl 08.08.2012

For the first time, scientists from the University of Cambridge have succeeded in replicating a natural process and synthesizing mother-of-pearl: the durable iridescent coating found on the inside of some mollusk shells and covering precious pearls.

By repeating biological processes, scientists for the first time were able to create artificial mother-of-pearl, which has a similar structure, mechanical and optical properties of natural material.

In order to create artificial mother-of-pearl, scientists used a three-step process. First, scientists prevented crystallization by precipitation from a solution of calcium carbonate, which is the main component of mother-of-pearl. This was achieved by using a mixture of ions and organic components in a solution that mimics the corresponding substance produced by the mollusk. As a result, it was possible to achieve uniform deposition of calcium carbonate on the surface. Further, the deposited layer of thickness was covered with a layer of organic matter with pores 10 nanometers in diameter. Finally, the crystallization process was carried out. Thus, with the help of alternating alternation of crystalline and organic layers, it was possible to create artificial mother-of-pearl.

As noted by one of the authors of the study, Alex Finnemore (Alex Finnemore), many modern composite materials are superior to mother-of-pearl in a combination of characteristics. However, mother-of-pearl coating can be used both for decorative purposes, for example in jewelry, and in industry - for the development of new processes for applying the most durable coatings. Moreover, the process of creating such coatings is very simple and can be easily automated.
