In modern times, due to the increased activity of terrorists, there is a danger of various incidents. Using a few simple components, you can make a Geiger counter. To detect alpha particles, a special Geiger sensor is needed. But to detect beta and gamma radiation, you can use a neon lamp.

The principle of operation is as follows (see figure). The alternating current is rectified by diode D1. The simplest stabilization circuit on the Zener diode D2 provides a constant voltage of 100V. The resistance value R1 depends on the supply voltage Vac and can be calculated from the formula

R1=(Vac-100V)/(5mA).

A simple neon geiger counter

Variable resistor R2 should set the voltage just below the ignition voltage of the lamp. The lamp should not glow. Then if the radioactive particles ionize the gas in the lamp, it will light up.

In this case, the resistor R3 will have the main voltage drop, and the lamp will have a voltage that is less than the holding voltage. No current will flow through the lamp until the next radioactive particle sets it on fire. During the short duration of current flow, a short click will be heard in the loudspeaker.

Other similar diagrams can be found in the book on experiments with radiation (in German) "Experimente mit Strahlenquellen im Haushalt".

Since the circuit is powered directly from the mains, appropriate precautions must be taken during operation to avoid the possibility of electric shock.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Silent flight of owls solved 04.02.2024

Scientists from CHIBA University in Japan have uncovered the secret of owls' silent flight. Researchers long fascinated by this unique ability of owls have discovered that the microfibre, a special feature of the trailing edge of owls' wings, plays a key role in suppressing noise while maintaining optimal aerodynamic performance.

The discovery of the influence of microbeams on the noise levels of owls in flight provides valuable knowledge that can be applied to technology to create quieter and more efficient aerodynamic systems. The prospects for the use of these principles in a variety of fields, including aviation and engineering, foreshadow steady progress in the fields of noise reduction and bioinspired innovation.

The team of scientists built two three-dimensional models of wings: one with a microfibre, and the other without it. Using a combination of vortex modeling techniques and Fox-Williams-Gocking computational acoustics, they simulated fluid flow to accurately reproduce flight conditions. The main attention was paid to the flight gliding speed of real owls.

The results of the study showed that microfibre effectively reduces the noise level of the wing, especially at high angles of attack, without harming aerodynamics compared to wings without this feature. Scientists have identified two complementary mechanisms by which microbiome affects air flow.

First, the micro-fender breaks up vortices at the trailing edge of the wing, reducing airflow fluctuations. Secondly, it reduces the interaction between feathers at the wing edge, preventing the formation of vortices. The combination of these mechanisms improves aerodynamic properties and reduces noise levels.

This discovery has broad prospects beyond ornithology. The study suggests similar strips could be used to reduce noise in a variety of man-made structures, including drones, windmills, propellers and even flying cars.

Experts believe that a thorough understanding of these mechanisms opens the way to the development of methods for reducing noise in equipment operating in liquid media.
