Fast walking can help you live longer

A study from the University of Sydney found that walking at an average pace reduced the risk of all-cause mortality by 20 percent compared to walking at a slow pace. If you walk at a fast pace, you reduce your risk by 24 percent. Separately, the risk for mortality from cardiovascular disease was calculated. At the same time, walking at an average pace reduced the risk by 24 percent, and at a fast pace - by 21 percent.

The effect of walking was found to be most pronounced in older age groups. People aged 60 and older could reduce their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 46 percent by walking at a moderate pace and by 53 percent by walking at a fast pace.

"A fast pace is usually between five and seven kilometers per hour, but this depends on the physical condition of the person; an alternative indicator is to walk at a pace that makes you slightly out of breath or sweat in order to maintain it," explained Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis from the Center Charles Perkins University of Sydney and School of Public Health, lead author of the study.

Prior to this, the relationship between stride rate and mortality risk had not been separately studied. "Walking pace is associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, but its specific role, independent of the overall physical activity that a person engages in, has received little attention so far," said Professor Stamatakis. “It is difficult to analyze the impact of one particular aspect of physical activity and discover its potential causal relationships with the risk of premature death,” the professor explained.

The latest study drew on data from 11 population surveys in England and Scotland between 1994 and 2008, in which participants self-reported their step pace. The research team then adjusted for factors such as the total amount and intensity of all physical activity, age, gender, and body mass index. Walking pace was found to be associated with a reduced risk of mortality. At the same time, gender and body mass index did not affect the results.

Scientists recommend walking at a fast and moderate pace, and promoting this idea through public health campaigns, given that the brisk walk is a very simple heart training option that most people can easily incorporate into their lives.

Graphene helps get into the brain 17.01.2017

The human brain is an extraordinarily complex and unique system, and there are many methods for studying it. We can judge information processes in the brain either by changes in interneuronal contacts - synapses, or by changes in blood circulation - working areas require more nutrients and oxygen; and the study of the human brain, in essence, is reduced to the observation of these two types of activity, manifested in response to various stimuli.

Usually, for neurophysiological studies, special arrays of microelectrodes (that is, many electrodes installed on a common matrix) are implanted into the brain, which make it possible to detect an electrical signal in several places at once. Depending on the experiment, such matrices are implanted either on the surface of the brain or deep into it.

Matrices of microelectrodes usually have a number of disadvantages: opaque contacts, limited transparency of the material as a whole, and non-uniform transmittance for different wavelengths. They are often made of a tough and biocompatible material, to which the brain reacts with inflammation. Ideally, the matrices should be transparent over a wide range so that neurons can be stimulated with light of different frequencies, from blue (used in optogenetics) to infrared (used in two-photon fluorescence microscopy) spectrum, flexible and biocompatible. It is also desirable that they be thin enough - with proper transparency, this allows optimizing the optical collection of information.

For matrix neuroelectrodes, materials such as titanium-sputtered indium titanium oxide (ITO) or zirconium are often used. They transmit 80% and 60% of the light, respectively, but the throughput is highly dependent on the wavelength, which makes it difficult to combine several methods that use different wavelengths of light for neurostimulation or response signal detection.

American physicists and neuroscientists have developed new microelectrode matrices based on graphene. Graphene is a honeycomb-shaped crystal of carbon atoms, one or more atoms thick - in fact, it is a two-dimensional crystal. If we make a lot of graphene layers in a stack, then we get graphite, well known to everyone.

Graphene is very flexible, and at the same time very strong for its thickness. It also has a transparency of about 90% in the spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, and is an excellent conductor of current. It is clear why many researchers are actively studying graphene and the possibility of using it to create thin and flexible electrodes.

Neuroscientists have high hopes for their invention: they are confident that it can be adapted for a variety of studies on the study of brain activity, as well as for the creation of implants. In addition, such an array of microelectrodes is also useful in experiments with cell cultures, in which it is very important to monitor cell growth.
