There are quite a lot of foreign-made cars on the roads of Russia today. To feel confident in heavy traffic and on a domestic car, sometimes you have to reinvent the wheel. Indeed, the idea of ​​supercharging an internal combustion engine to increase its power by increasing the intake air pressure is not new. However, the use of aggregate pressurization is one of the cheapest ways to achieve this goal.

For example, I installed the simplest design on my Moskvich-2140. And repeat my experience within the power of any other motorist.

As a supercharging unit, I used an air blower from the cabin heater ("stove") of the GAZ-66 car, replacing its standard electric motor with a more powerful 40-watt one.

I attached the supercharger (with the air intake forward) to the mudguard with a bracket cut out of a 3 mm thick steel strip and connected it to the air cleaner with a slightly shortened standard hose. I eliminated a small gap between the cover and the air filter housing by putting a polyvinyl chloride hose cut along the housing on the housing.

To power the supercharger from the on-board electrical circuit, I use the rear window defroster switch (this defroster is not on my car). I turn on the boost only when the engine is fully warmed up.

My experience of two years of operation of the supercharger shows that boost significantly improves acceleration dynamics and helps to overcome long climbs more easily. In addition, some (within 10 percent) fuel economy is observed. At idle, as well as at medium crankshaft speeds, the fuel mixture burns more completely, which means that harmful emissions into the atmosphere are reduced. At high speeds, with the opening of the secondary mixing chamber of the carburetor, engine power increases significantly, since more combustible mixture enters the cylinders. When driving downhill and under engine braking, I turn off the supercharger. He "rests", because the EPHH system at this time shuts off the fuel supply to the carburetor.

Thubber: super elastic rubber with metal properties 18.02.2017

Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a thermally conductive rubber material that could be a breakthrough in the development of soft stretchable mechanisms and electronics.

The new material, dubbed "thubber", is an electrically insulating material with the thermal conductivity of metals, the elasticity of soft, biological tissues, and can stretch to six times its original length.

"Our combination of high thermal conductivity and elasticity is particularly important for the rapid dissipation of heat in devices such as body-worn electronics or soft robots that require mechanical flexibility and stretchable functionality," the researchers say. Such materials can also be used in sportswear and medicine, energy and transportation.

The key ingredient of the new rubber is a suspension of non-toxic liquid metal microdroplets. The liquid state allows the metal to deform along with the surrounding rubber at room temperature. When the rubber is stretched, the droplets form elongated trajectories that are effective in dissipating heat. Despite the large amount of metal, the material also retains electrical insulating properties.

To demonstrate the properties of the material, the scientists attached LEDs to a strip of thubber to make a lamp that any runner can wear around their leg. The new material dissipates the heat from the diodes, which would otherwise burn a person. The researchers also created a soft robotic fish that swims with the help of a thubber tail without the help of conventional motors or gears.
