It would seem difficult to imagine this elegant high-speed motorcycle as a truck. However, it does an excellent job as a heavy truck, thanks to a reliable and durable engine that has good fins, as well as sufficient torque throughout the entire speed range of the crankshaft. I must say that before that my Java-350/634 with the Velorex-562 sidecar had been in operation for ten years. Mileage was about 60 km. With a full load, the motorcycle confidently covered considerable distances both on freeways and on dirt roads. Off-road and rugged terrain were also not an obstacle for him. The motorcycle's trouble-free service under these conditions is sufficient proof that under normal conditions, in addition to three riders, it is also capable of transporting a significant load. But where to place it? The carrying capacity of the stroller is limited to 000 kg, it did not make sense to install an additional trunk on it. The logical conclusion is to make a cargo trailer.

The impetus for action was the skeleton of a cargo motor scooter "Ant" that caught the author's eye, abandoned by someone in a wasteland. And its well-preserved body made the design task easier. On the whole, the layout of the trailer was determined by the details and assemblies that we managed to purchase: wheels - from the Voskhod motorcycle, shock absorbers, brake lights and direction indicators - from Java.

In fact, the idea of a cargo trailer for a motorcycle is not new and has found a fairly complete reflection on the pages of the magazine "Modeler-Constructor". However, the proposed models, along with undeniable advantages, were not free, from the point of view of the author, from shortcomings that I wanted to avoid in my own design. So, the low position of the body, which contributes to the stability of the trailer, has its drawbacks. Firstly, for a given body size, the trailer wheel track is wider than that of a motorcycle. And this is undesirable due to a decrease in patency when driving on loose soil (sand, arable land). Secondly, the mud flaps protruding above the sides interfere with the reliable fastening of bulky cargo (plywood sheets, fiberboard, etc.).

Thus, the first point of the requirements for the trailer was formulated: its track must match the track of the motorcycle. Further, as a result of observations and subsequent analysis of the operation of industrial and home-made automobile and motorcycle trailers, the remaining requirements were formulated: maximum carrying capacity with a minimum dead weight; equipping with signaling and lighting devices provided for by the Rules of the Road; the presence of a soft suspension with shock absorbers that dampen vibrations; limiting the dimensions of the trailer in width by the dimensions of a motorcycle with a sidecar; increased angle of mutual rotation of the trailer and motorcycle in the coupling device; reduced noise when driving; safety of cargo from wind, dust, rain, etc.; finally, an aesthetic appearance that matches the design of the motorcycle.

Motorcycle cargo trailer
The design of the cargo trailer (click to enlarge): 1 - body (from the scooter "Ant"); 2 - light fixture bracket (steel, sheet s2); 3- rack (pipe 28x25); 4 - frame (corner 42x42); 5,22 - longitudinal rods, upper (pipe 28x25); 6,23 - longitudinal rods, lower (pipe 28x25); 7 - carrier (corner 42x42, L766); 8 - bracket for transverse torque rod (steel, sheet s2); 9,17 - mud flaps (from the Voskhod motorcycle); 10 - direction indicator (from the motorcycle "Java"); 11 - brake light (from the motorcycle "Java"); 12- brace (pipe 28x25); 13 - transverse rod, jet (pipe 28x25); 14-bridge assembly; 15 - bottom of the body; 16,20 - shock absorbers (from the Java motorcycle); 18 - wheel (from the motorcycle "Sunrise"); 19 - M12 bolts; 21 - castellated nut M12; 24 - cheek bracket of the lower longitudinal rod (steel, sheet s2); 25 - silent block; 26 - remote bushing; 27 - spacer bushing.

Motorcycle cargo trailer
Coupling device (click to enlarge): 1 - yoke (pipe 34x5); 2 - M6x10 screws (4 pcs.); 3,14 - clamps (steel, sheet s1,6); 4 - locking wire; 5 - rear clamp body (steel); 6 - M6x20 screws (4 pcs.); 7 - cotter pin; 8,10 - tips with an ear (steel); 9 - earring (steel); 11 - castellated nut M16; 12 - BolgM12x45; 13 - castellated nut M12; 15 - front clamp body (steel)

The requirements for carrying capacity and equipment with signaling and lighting devices do not need explanation. A soft suspension is preferable to a rigid one due to the fact that the load is better preserved, especially fragile, and the driver is less tired when driving with a trailer.

The limitation of the dimensions in width is due to the need to ensure safety when driving in dense urban traffic, when a driver who is accustomed to the dimensions of a motorcycle with a sidecar is behind the wheel.

The minimization of the trailer weight led to the classic form of the carrier frame with the drawbar lowered. The high position of the body (at the cost of some reduction in stability) gave its plus - the load is removed from road dust and dirt, as well as drops of oil from the exhaust pipes. It is worth noting that in the five years of operation of the trailer, there were no cases of its capsizing. Not in sideways motion, not in corners.

About the coupling device should be said in more detail. The rules provide for the connection of the tractor with the trailer using a spherical joint, which complies with international standards. But the trouble is that not all the roads we have to travel on meet these standards. It's not uncommon for cars to have trunks adorned with dents from their own detached trailers. One of the reasons is the excess of the permissible angle of mutual rotation, and, as a result, the occurrence of large spacer forces that open the spherical hinge. The smaller base of a motorcycle compared to a car increases the likelihood of this happening. Therefore, the author connected his trailer to a motorcycle with a device that has three mutually perpendicular axes of rotation. This design solution allows the trailer to deviate to the right-left and up-down at an angle close to 90 °, and turn about its longitudinal axis at almost any angle.

The coupling device is located under the bottom of the stroller and is bolted to its frame. The low location of the device did not worsen the cross-country ability of the motor train. But taking it to the middle of the track was preceded by doubts: would this lead to difficulties in management? Will the motorcycle turn around with a trailer?

Practice has dispelled these doubts. The turning radius of the motorcycle has not increased. As a result of the increase in the total mass, the dynamics of the motor train, of course, worsened, but within the permissible limits. Three wheels of a motorcycle with brakes provide fairly effective braking.

The effect of a turn is felt only when the trailer is fully loaded, and there is one driver on the motorcycle. However, this situation is contrary to the requirements of the Rules of the Road, as well as regulatory documents that stipulate the ratio of the maximum gross weight of the trailer and the curb weight of the tractor (in this case, a motorcycle). You can solve this problem by moving part of the cargo from the trailer to the stroller. If the load is indivisible, then it is enough to take a passenger into the stroller.

Strength calculations determined the own weight of the trailer - 90 kg and the permissible payload - 150 kg. Tests on a run of about 10 km confirmed the correctness of design decisions. Even with a maximum, but properly distributed load, the motor train fits well into the urban traffic flow, moves steadily along the highway at speeds up to 000 km/h, “feels” confidently on a dirt road, and satisfactorily overcomes impassability.

Now for the noise. The following solutions contribute to the reduction of its level: in the hinges of the coupling device, bolts with a nut for cotter pins are used as axles, which allows you to select gaps as they occur; rubber silent blocks are installed in the hinges of the lever suspension; regular locks of the tailgate of the body were replaced by others - "gramophone" type (as on "KamAZ"), which tightly press the tailgate to the side boards.

To protect the cargo from atmospheric influences, there is an awning with a removable tubular frame.

The trailer is painted in the same colors as the motorcycle: the body is red, the frame and suspension are black, the mudguards and wheel covers are gray.

And finally, the answer to the question, where is a quarter of a ton of cargo? Please: in a trailer - 150 kg, in a sidecar - 100 kg and up to 20 kg - on the trunk of a motorcycle. Total 270 kg!

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Selenide phonon 15.12.2015

Thermoelectrics are materials that convert heat into electricity. To do this, it is necessary that one side of such a material be significantly warmer than the other, that is, it must conduct heat poorly, and electricity well. Usually these two properties are related: the higher the thermal conductivity, the higher the conductivity, and vice versa. Tin selenide is considered a promising material among thermoelectrics: both properties of it turned out to be disconnected. Why is not clear.

To unravel this mystery, researchers from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy, led by Oliver Delaret, used a supercomputer to build models, and a neutron source from the Oak Ridge reactor - from the pattern of scattering of neutrons passed through the sample, one can follow the vibrations of the crystal lattice. They are the main ones in this matter: it is the quanta of such vibrations - phonons - that transfer heat in a solid, and electrons are scattered on them.

Usually atoms vibrate harmonically - with equal amplitude in each direction from the lattice site. Such harmonic phonons travel without interaction. But if anharmonicity appears - in one direction with each vibration the atom deviates more strongly than in the other, then the phonons begin to interact and get stuck in each other. As it turned out, tin selenide exhibits very strong anharmonicity of vibrations at temperatures below 810°C: the lattice behaves like accordion bellows. Because of this, phonons quickly get stuck and cannot provide temperature equalization.

Thermoelectrics are the most important material of the 60st century: it is believed that with their help it will be possible not only to create silent, economical refrigerators or elements for utilizing the heat of the Sun, but also to collect those XNUMX% of the heat that devices created by man senselessly dissipate in the environment. The instability of the tin selenide lattice suggests which direction should be taken when optimizing such materials.
