PERSONAL TRANSPORT: GROUND, WATER, AIR
Tricycle. Personal transport Directory / Personal transport: land, water, air It took me only three weeks to assemble a two-seater walking velomobile from parts of old bicycles. The swift wedge-shaped profile suggested the name of the new machine - "Sail". It turned out to be maneuverable, easy on the go and strong enough. The low seating position creates a purely "automobile" feeling of speed, the elongated frame and soft seats well hide shocks from bumps in the road. We went on the "Sail" together and even three of us - with a small child on our laps. The total mileage was already more than 300 km. So we can conclude: the task set - to create a multi-seat comfortable bicycle machine with increased power-to-weight ratio (due to the introduction of second pedals) - has been successfully solved.
And now - more about the device of the velomobile. Layout. The machine is made according to a three-wheel scheme, with two independent driving rear wheels and one front steering wheel. This is rational, as it allows to simplify the power circuit of the structure and the control system. The minimum turning radius is 2,5 m. With a dead weight of 40 kg, the velomobile speeds up to 25 km/h.
The location of the chain drives is asymmetric: for the driver it passes to the left, inside the body, and for the passenger it is moved to the right, beyond the dimensions of the body. This is especially justified if a woman in a dress or a child is sitting in the passenger seat: the chain does not interfere or get dirty. In addition, such a drive installation made it possible to use the wheels of a road bike with virtually no alterations.
The center of gravity of the velomobile is located so that about 70% of the load falls on the rear wheels. Thanks to this, good stability of the car is ensured on corners when driving alone or together. The role of the differential is performed by regular overrunning clutches of the rear wheels.
The body is a frame-shell construction, made of pipes from a bicycle frame and old folding beds and decorated with leatherette and table oilcloth. Conventionally, the body can be divided into a power frame and a fairing.
Power frame. All its connections are made on M5 screws using scarves, pads and clamps from bicycle frames and a clamshell. The blanks of the central and lateral parts of the frame and carriage units are made with allowances - to fit and grow. Couplings. They are necessary to connect the side bracket crank and the center bracket pedal.
When making them at home, I can recommend the following technology. We cut off an end 50 mm long from the cornice pipe (a little more is possible). With a file we make two semicircles with a radius of 2-5 mm. We put bearing No. 80200 on the plate and cover it with a coupling blank, cuts down. By hitting the workpiece with a hammer, we press the bearing into it. We make longitudinal cuts with a nil and remove excess metal. In places of bending, we carefully round all the corners with a file and make fillets. Then we bend the paws and drill holes 0 6 mm in accordance with the figure. It remains to install the couplings in accordance with the figure and check whether the pedals turn easily. Steering. The steering assembly is mounted with support on the left central carriage assembly. Its intermediate fork-lever is made from parts of the front fork and the front of the frame of a ladies' bicycle; refinement of the fork: one feather is cut off, the second is bent, and a hole of 0 6 mm is made at the end to fix the steering rod connecting it to the front wheel fork. Rod length 230 mm. The handlebar extension is made from a pipe from a clamshell. The steering wheel from the bicycle "Schoolboy" is fixed in it with a regular cone. Transmission. The velomobile has two single-stage chain gears made from components and parts of a road bike. The selected type of transmission with rear brake hubs is quite suitable for short trips at low speeds. For long trips, it is desirable to have 3-4 additional stars. Body-fairing. A body-fairing made of clamshell pipes is rigidly attached to the power frame. It is made integral with the frame, covered with leatherette and oilcloth and carries a power load. The dimensions of the hood and its shape depend on the desires of the designer and the purpose of the velomobile. The seats are covered with oilcloth. Initially, I put a polik on the velomobile, but this did not justify itself, since the asymmetric loads at the front wheel in a three-wheeled scheme require a very rigid frame. An apron made of raincoat fabric will completely protect against dirt and splashes.
Such solutions made it possible to obtain a light and easily repairable body of bright colors, which is important for safety in the general traffic flow. "Sail" everywhere arouses great interest and desire to ride it, especially since everyone understands: this is not a bicycle, it does not require the development of special preliminary riding skills. Indeed, it is not difficult to be convinced of the merits of such transport: it is enough to get behind the wheel and press the pedals.
